As a math teacher

I have always been fascinated by the possibility of "beating the house" by counting cards. The recent movie 21 has revived interest in counting cards so I have collected the best resources available online...

Scroll down to learn about Basic Strategy, The Hi-Lo count, etc. You can even practice!

Note: If my students find this page you are absolutely forbidden to practice counting cards. And while you are not counting cards you are also forbidden to give my lens 5 Stars above or add it to your favorites.

Basic Strategy

The first step is to master basic strategy. You can memorize a table such as the one below. There is another one at Blackjack Info which lets you adjust the table for different rules.

OR

You can practice online. My favorite place to practice is at Hit or Stand. You can play twenty hands and practice your basic strategy. When you make a mistake, the computer makes an annoying sound and tells you what you should have done.

Although it does keep track of your "winnings," the point is to learn basic strategy.

Update: Another place to practice is at Blackjack Info.

Should counting cards be illegal?

Do you think counting cards gives the player an unfair advantage? Or do you think players should be able to count cards?

Yes, it's unfair to the poor Casinos

It seems dishonest but then again you're just using your brain power to try and beat the house. I suppose if I knew how to count cards at the blackjack table, I'd be singing a different tune!

only if it is done by a group and so people can make lots of money without actually playing the game

More on Blackjack

Blackjack, also known as Twenty-one, Vingt-et-un (French for Twenty-one), or Pontoon, is the most widely played casino banking game in the world.Scarnes New Complete Guide to Gambling, p. 342 Much of blackjacks popularity is due to the mix of chance with elements of skill, and the publicity that surrounds card counting (calculating the probability of advantages based on the ratio of high cards to low cards). The casino version of the game should not be confused with the British card game Black Jack (a variant of Crazy Eights).

More on Counting Cards

Card counting is a card game strategy used to determine when a player has a probability advantage. The term is used almost exclusively to refer to the tracking of the ratio of high cards to low cards in blackjack and its derivatives such as Spanish 21, although it is sometimes used to refer to obtaining a count of the distribution or remaining high cards in trick-taking games, such as contract bridge or spades. This article deals only with card counting as it applies to blackjack and its derivatives.
