How To Create A Fairy Garden

Do You Believe In Fairies?

My granddaughter has always loved helping me in the garden, especially with the flowers. I think she had her hands in the dirt pulling weeds even before before she could walk. As she grew she became more and more insistent on having her own garden.

We made a trip to Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival at Disney World to see all of the beautiful flowers and she discovered fairy gardens. Now my little sweet pea is quite taken with fairies, especially Tinkerbell. She thought the fairy gardens were amazing and informed me that we did not have any fairies in our garden. Of course she convinced me of our dire need of fairies and we were off to plan our garden.

Whether you believe in fairies or not, a fairy garden can be a fun, imaginative, and magical place. Well at least we have lots of fun and have used a ton of imagination in creating her magical spot. Come along and I will share with you step by step how we created her fairy garden.

"Just living is not enough" said the butterfly fairy, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."

Decide On A Location For Your Fairy Garden

fairy gardenA fairy garden can be any size that you like from an entire garden to a small little nook.

In deciding upon a location think about what type of a fairy garden you would want. Would you like it under a tree for a shady, woodsy atmosphere, or maybe you would like to include a water feature. Do you want it mostly green, all flowers, all herbs, or a mixture of everything. You will have to think about how much light your location receives for the type of garden that you desire.

Fairy gardens can be incorporated into an established garden or beginning fresh. If you do not have a yard you can even use a container or two.

We chose a small spot that was not planted and received mostly sun in the front of the house.

Map Out Your Fairy Garden

Once you decide on a location, then decide how big and what shape you would like your fairy garden to be.

Draw it out on paper so that you can make a plan of what plants and decorations that you want to include.

What will your focal point be? It could be a tree, a plant, a water feature, a statue, gazing ball, your possibilities are endless, just be sure it is something that you love. You might also want to consider what type of ground cover such as mulch and type of border, if any, you would like to use at this point.

As you find the plants that you would like to include add them to your drawing. This will make planting time easier.

What Should You Plant In Your Fairy Garden?

fairy gardenWe found out that fairies like any plants that are native to your area, but they are especially fond of anything that attracts insects and animals.

Smaller scale plants are perfect for a fairy garden. We used mostly flowers that attract butterflies but herbs are a wonderful choice also.

If you have a bit of shade, plants such as ferns are great for giving fairies a place to hide. Fairies also love the feel of moss and the green looks so pretty by all of the flowers.

When choosing plants keep in mind that fairies prefer plants in a more wild and natural arrangement, forget the neat tidy little rows.

Plant Your Fairy Garden

fairy gardenYou have chosen all of your plants - now it is time to get dirty and get them growing.

Plot out your plan on the ground and dig. Get the soil ready for planting by turning and adding compost. Keep in mind that chemicals will be sure to keep any fairies away so keep your garden organic.

If you are using plants to start your garden, you will want to set them out according to your plan and then take a look at them to be sure it is the look you were trying to achieve. If not, move them around until you are satisfied. Be sure to keep your taller plants to the back and smaller ones in the front.

When the planting is done add your ground cover and water with love.

Let's Decorate Your Fairy Garden.

This is the part that I love the most and that you can get really creative with.

You can add tiny wind chimes , houses, statues, natural rocks or pebbles, shells, and so much more. Use your imagination, what type of feeling do you want to create? Adding a few shiny objects are sure to make the fairies smile as fairies love anything shiny.

We made our own fairy houses out of things we found in the yard. My granddaughter painted some small animal statues, made some things for their houses out of clay, and then added some little figures.

You do not have to make everything, you can buy many miniature items. I do recommend making most of it if you are working with a child, as we had so much fun coming up with and making our creations.

Now Enjoy Your Fairy Garden

Have a tea party and celebrate the opening of your fairy garden, don't forget the miniature tea set for the fairies.

Visit your garden often, my granddaughter tends to hers and often visits to read and sing to the flowers and fairies. You can find her out taking photographs of her garden quite often too.

She loves to leave little gifts for the fairies such as rocks or shells that she finds. Sometimes she draws pictures for them or leaves a muffin crumb. Once in a while they even leave her a tiny surprise.
