I did our backyard patio once. My husband was on a business trip just a week after we've moved to an old house we have completely renovated. I took courage one weekend under the watching and surprised gaze of our new neighbors. I can't really carry things but I managed somehow to bring home all those paving stones and used my old luggage to transport them from my car to the back. Armed with a book, I did it. Home Depot is always useful. I surprised myself but the front yard, I hired a contractor. I don't think I could ever muster such courage!

I'd like to rework my patio however, I can't. I'm two left handed, you know. But I enjoyed my second visit on this page, it's always delightful to read your writings, Julie.

Love the detailed photos and explanations. We just did a walkway in our front yard with pavers...love it! The added attraction to us has been that it does not freeze up in the cold wet weather...no slipping! We are going to be doing another area in our backyard and I will remember some of your tips. Thanks for the lovely lens!
Adding to my favorites and leaving a special Angel Blessing.

Such a good lens you've made and I feel a bit of envy since my husband also made a patio last summer and I failed to capture it's progress on video. Ok, I live and learn. I'll never let another project go by with me documenting it for my lens.
  • minirich Oct 20, 2010 @ 4:39 pm | delete
This looks great, im only a little concerned about the base, it looks a little thin and not enough compressed.
I like the different color of the stone pavers. I usually use natural stone with uneven edges, ist more challeng to lay but it looks great.
You can be proud you did it your self, i know people who are not able to make up their mind to order it from a professional craftsman.
  • akarki Oct 14, 2010 @ 1:34 pm | delete
very nice patio, and very clear instuctions. i am glad for Nick's suggestion about the sealing sand, i am doing some DIY work at home and i will use it. thank you, Julie for this so useful lens.
  • ShamanicShift Oct 2, 2010 @ 2:51 pm | delete
These are very clear instructions and photos--great, useful lens.
  • Nick Sep 29, 2010 @ 8:21 am | delete
Very nice patio, but be careful. You only tamped down the sand until it made a firm base. Over time the patio might or should sink in certain spots. In the future i would reccomend a more solid base, bout a foot of 3/4 inch gravel thats tampered so water drainage isnt a problem. And i saw you did lay plastic down, which will work but in most cases it's not good for the environment and doesnt give the ground room to breath for drainage. I would use landscaping fabric instead of plastic. And 1 more thing. I did notice your spaces inbetween the pavers is pretty thick. And you filled it in with the remaining leveling sand. This works, but its easy to be washed away. They make a sealing sand that goes in the cracks just like you did with a broom. And once you spray it with water it creates a permanent seal. This will prevent growth of roots and weeds and most likely give it a professional looking shine when its finished. When you have a deeper base like i suggest, it's easier to eliminate the weed problem. Plastic doesnt always work. But all in all. I think you did a great job, and it looks real nice.

Looks great! It is very satisfying to do something like paving or tiling yourself. It's just a little bit tricky so that it's impressive, but not so much so that it makes it stressful.

What extremely useful information, great pictures and easy to follow instructions, now if only I had a nice patio to put those nice patio stones on LOL Landscaping and gardening aren't my thing * pouts * Hubby did a wonderful job, and is most deserving of those bad ass moose droppings, or was hubby bad ass? I keep getting mixed up LOL, either way squidhugs for you both! - Kathy

Hello my friend Julie! Very informative lens...don't know how I missed this lens.
My hubby made a walkway around the side and back of our house to our patio...he got inspired to do this after he laid over a thousand bricks on the "Walkway of Honor" (Medal of Honor recipients in our county) it took a long time with his fellow Vet's, and a huge successful opening ceremony on Veteran's Day (visitors buy a brick, we inscribe the name they give us honoring of a Vet, this is how it got paid for)
  • paperfacets Jun 14, 2010 @ 1:15 pm | delete
Thanks for the how to. I am planning a small deck on our slope for a couple of chairs and this is helping me think about the layout. Still in the thinking stages. Bought the chairs only.
  • prosperity66 Jun 13, 2010 @ 7:08 am | delete
I'm green with envy! It's beautiful! We use a lot of pavers for patio and even for sidewalk here, it's the rage for 15 years now - and safer than blue stone, that we used to use for such purpose. OK, I'm off to look and find a man that would take do the job - hahaha.
  • JaguarJulie Jun 14, 2010 @ 8:43 am | delete
Say Dom! My hubby took care to provide what he thought was helpful steps, and incorporating the correct pictures so that anybody could do this project. It is something I could not try if my back and hips hold out. Let me know when you try it. Love to see those pictures!
  • Greekgeek Jun 9, 2010 @ 5:22 pm | delete
Hmmm. I wish my back were not shot already, or I would use your information to CORRECT the lousy job done by the previous homeowner to my semi-paved patio. But maybe I should add new levelling sand.

Yours looks lovely. At least now if I get mine redone I'll know what to do!
  • JaguarJulie Jun 10, 2010 @ 6:41 am | delete
Well my dear, WE surely hear you about having a shot back! Hubby had to work between issues he had -- lots of ibuprofen! I helped with the hauling of the stone pavers as I too have had serious back issues, but had "surgery" in May 1996 that has held up thus far! The patio still looks great and gets daily use for our feral cats' feedings. Thanks so much for dropping by!

Great job, I might even be able to do this! Oh, yeah, forgot, my back can't do it...5*

Hey, I've seen this lens before! Really shocked that it didn't reflect my star rating. It's ok tho, I've re-rated it (a 5!) I want to do something like this, but don't think I'll use brick. Weirdo me wants something I've created........like maybe those kits you can get to make your own stepping stones?!
  • RawBill Mar 1, 2010 @ 6:34 pm | delete
This is great information. I have never seen that type of edging that you can stake into pace. I like that!
  • kiwisoutback Feb 22, 2010 @ 8:51 am | delete
Great work! Looks like you've covered everything in this tutorial. You didn't skip a thing (and there are so many tutorials that DO miss things, this is awesome). I would definitely be able to tackle this project with this info.
  • HorseAndPony Nov 9, 2009 @ 10:11 pm | delete
This was very clear and easy to follow. Your patio looks great and I love Rocky the Raccoon.

I've always admired paved streets, driveways and patios. To me they have a special, hard to describe charm to them. Great lens, all stars... :)

I remember when you were working on this project and thought "now that would be a great lens idea!" The colors are just beautiful and you are going force me to do this in the Spring :)
~ Blessings to you, Julie ~

Excellent advice. One day I shall make a patio. Maybe next spring...

You've done a wonderful job with this lens! That sure is one handsome guy in those photos.
  • jeffwend Sep 1, 2009 @ 11:32 pm | delete
I have been procrastinating doing this same thing. I had some questions about the base and this lens answered them perfectly.
  • FantasyDesigns Aug 31, 2009 @ 11:56 pm | delete
    Awesome tips! 5 *'s!
  • Ally Aug 14, 2009 @ 4:10 pm | delete
Great instructions - thank you! I'm not brave enough to tackle a whole patio but plan to put stone pavers on either side of my yard's side gate to prevent my dog from pulling his Houdini act and digging through the ground on either side of the chain link fence. Cheers!
  • Suzie-Shine Aug 7, 2009 @ 11:39 am | delete
What a super lens. I remember when I was little helping / hindering my father when he created a patio. It's still there today so I did a good job. Okay he did!

I am sitting next to Jaguar Julie at this time and she is telling me she is so proud of this project, but all I saw is her taking photos of Ray working the whole time. what's that about!

Nicely done & blessed. My husband has been promising my eldest son that he 'could' build a patio this summer...

I wonder if there are any cold weather considerations when you build a patio? (We're in central Canada.)
  • spirituality Jul 21, 2009 @ 9:46 am | delete
Well done & congrats on that purple star :)
  • JustBon-Crochet-Designs Jul 21, 2009 @ 1:22 am | delete
Wow! A lot of hard work, Julie, both on the patio and the lens. And they've both turned out beautifully :) Congrats on the Purple Star!

  • CherylK Jul 19, 2009 @ 8:05 pm | delete
A stellar lens, Julie! I believe that anyone could do this just following your directions. Now if only I needed a patio! Congrats on the Purple Star, too.
  • Marelisa Jul 17, 2009 @ 1:49 pm | delete
How awesome, one minute you don't have a patio, and the next you do! I'm not really the do-it-yourself kind of person when it comes to home improvement, but it sure is fun to watch those who are beautify their homes. Love Rocky the Racoon posing for you. :-) Congratulations on your purple star.
  • BigGirlBlue Jul 17, 2009 @ 12:39 am | delete
That's a great how to. DH and I have been thinking about doing a small section in the front so this was helpful.

  • Pastiche Jul 15, 2009 @ 1:02 pm | delete
Terrific job and beautiful work on the stone paver patio. Now you just need to make a nice sand cast leaf birdbath and use it for Rocky's nibble dish ...

  • bdkz Jul 14, 2009 @ 6:57 pm | delete
    Excellent job on this!
  • ronpass Jul 14, 2009 @ 3:57 pm | delete
Great step-by-step information - I created a patio with bricks (placed on their side) many years ago. I can appreciate the planning and back-breaking work involved, not the least of which is carting the materials into position. Excellent lens again, JaguarJulie.
  • WendyKrick Jul 14, 2009 @ 3:37 pm | delete
    Very nice lens! 5 stars!

  • Susan52 Jul 14, 2009 @ 12:43 pm | delete
Wow, very complete! Except for the physical labor (the hauling), I think I could do this myself with your directions. Excellent documentation, directions, and pictures!
  • WhiteOak50 Jul 14, 2009 @ 10:56 am | delete
This is wonderful. Do you know what would be a great addition to the whole setting, some Moonflower Vines. In the evening when you are enjoying your new patio, the air could be filled with the enchanting scent from the MoonFlower. They are easy to grow from seed-just be sure to soak them over night. This flower only blooms one time, one night but it is worth it growing. They are some of the most beautiful flowers. They love to climb so you would need something for them to climb on. But when I seen your finished project, that is the first thing that came to mind. Wonderful job as always with your lens!
  • poutine Jul 14, 2009 @ 10:22 am | delete
I wish my husband would do things of that nature, but
    it's not his "genre".

Your husband did a great job with the patio and you
did a great one detailing and photographing everything.

My Dad is working on this same project for the front patio right now. Hes got some baby palm trees that he's integrating into his design. Great lens!
  • lilkon Jul 14, 2009 @ 9:25 am | delete
Well the master mason certainly out did himself on this project, looks great Julie but you really back off on the old boy or you will totally mess up his golf game. PROTEST a bit at least drag your feet Ray.
  • chefkeem Jul 14, 2009 @ 9:07 am | delete
    Learned something. Thanks.

  • lilkon Jul 14, 2009 @ 7:58 am | delete
This project looks like a great muscle builder but did the back survive? Has the golf game impoved because of all this effort? The photographer did an excellent job. What's next on the adgenda?
  • rms Jul 14, 2009 @ 7:54 am | delete
Please come to my house and build me a patio too! I LOVE it!
