How to create a Photo Contact Sheet in Adobe Photoshop CS2, CS3 & CS4
Ranked #9,583 in Arts & Design, #173,893 overall
Creating a Contact Sheet Simply and Easily
The guide is published here in 2 parts. 'Part 1' explains how to set a constant width for your photos using batch processing (optional, depending on your own preference). In 'Part 2' you will create and export the actual contact sheet.
After this one time setup, you will have an automated process at your disposal that will give you a complete "at a glance" composite of your image collection in the form of a clear and concise contact sheet.
At all times please retain a backup of your source images and export all output to a subfolder.
Before we begin...
Let's set up your source

Part 1: Setting your Image Widths (Optional)
Batch convert your images to a common width

Here you may also add an overlay if required e.g 'YOUR EVENT', or anything you like.
Hit "Start Batch" in IrfanView
The resulting output is as follows:

Now we can move onto exporting our contact sheet!
Part 2: Creating your Contact Sheet
Create your Contact Sheet using your output from 'Part 1'

Photoshop will auto-create captions for each phot0 based on the file name of your images. Hit "OK" and Photoshop will generate the contact sheet as follows...
Contact Sheet Created!
Lets take a look at it...

Great!
For print purposes the white background is fine. If your contact sheet is for screen viewing only, you may wish to alter the background colour so that it is easier on the eye...
Change Background Colour
An optional Final Touch

If you feel that the white background behind the grid is a little harsh on the eyes, you can change it to a soft grey, something like #CBCBCB.
The Final Contact Sheet
Ready to go...

Finally, save the flattened contact sheet and you're all done.
Conclusion
I hope you find this useful. When time allows I will update this lens to include support for Photoshop CS5.
Thanks and best wishes.
