The Basic Stitches
complicated patterns.
Crochet is, by using a hook, the pulling of loops of yarn through other loops to create pieces of goods used for wearing apparel and for household items. The first published references to crochet were in the 1800s. Today there are many free crochet patterns available, along with instructions for learning the basic stitches, for those who are wanting to learn how to crochet.
With the invention of the cotton gin in the 1800s, crochet replaced more costly methods of lace making. Crocheted laces in the Edwardian period were elaborate with complicated stitching. White thread became common, replacing strong colors that were used earlier in the Victorian era. After WW1, there were less patterns produced for crochet, but after WWII, new patterns were produced, there were thicker threads and yarns, and there was a renewed interest in learning how to crochet. Today's yarns with new textures and wonderful colors have added to the popularity. There are many free crochet patterns online.
Although different pattern types are used for crochet projects, there are only a few basic crochet stitches to know when learning how to crochet as the interesting patterns are worked with combinations of these few stitches.
To form more complex patterns, these are basic stitches to learn:
US - The Stitch - The Abbreviation
Chain - ch
Single Crochet - sc
Half Double Crochet - hdc
Double Crochet - dc
Slip Stitch - slst
also - the Treble and Triple Treble
Different terminology is used in different countries. Some of the names of the stitches differ between American English - US - and British English - UK.
A few of the many patterns which are made using these basic stitches are the shell stitch and the picot, commonly used for edgings, the different cluster stitches, and the popcorn stitch. The instructions for forming these and many, many more complex patterns are generally included in the crochet pattern instructions.

5 How to Videos - chain stitch - single crochet - double crochet - half double - triple (treble)
A Beginner's Project - Headband
EASY HEADBAND CROCHET PATTERN FOR BEGINNERS
Knitting Worsted Yarn - Size G Hook
Chain 11
Row 1 - single crochet in the second chain from the hook and single crochet across the row - 10 stitches -
chain 1 and turn the work.
Hint for beginners - In Row 1 - crochet in the top loop of the stitch.
In Row 2 and all remaining rows of the pattern - crochet in 2 loops of every stitch.
Row 2 - single crochet across the row - 10 stitches - chain 1 - turn
Hint for beginners - Be sure the first stitch is in the first space - directly below the chain 1. Pull the crocheting apart just a little to easily see the first space. Count the stitches as you crochet and be sure there are 10 stitches in Row 2 - otherwise, rip back and redo Row 2 starting in the first space.
Repeat Row 2 (counting each stitch in the row as you go to be sure there are 10 stitches) until the piece measures 21" (or desired length).
Using a yarn needle, sew the seam..

Crochet Angel
CROCHET CHRISTMAS ANGEL
An easy crochet pattern for a 4-1/2 inch angel.
Sugar'n Cream Crochet Thread - Size G Crochet Hook - Crochet Needle
ch-chain sc-single crochet dc-double crochet
The Skirt:
Chain 17
Row 1 - sc across row. (16 st) Ch 2.
Row 2 through 4 - dc (16 st) Ch 2.
Row 5 - dc. Tie off, cut yarn, leaving a 12" length.
With the yarn needle, sew the two edges together, matching rows and picking up 2 threads on each side of the seam. This makes a more solid seam.
Making the Head:
Cut a piece of cardboard 2 inches wide by several inches long. Wrap yarn around the 2-inch cardboard about 30 times. Cut an 8-inch length of yarn and, slipping it under the wrapped yarn, tie securely and this will be the top of the head. Tie the ends of the 8" length of yarn one inch from the ends to form a hanging loop for the angel. Remove from the cardboard and wrap a piece of yarn halfway down from the top of the head and tie securely, forming the neck of the angel.
With the yarn needle, gather the ending edge of the skirt by sewing through the loops of the last row of double crochet. Place over the head and pull tightly and tie at the neck with the seam at the back of the angel. Be sure to run the needle and thread through the neck area to secure the head.
Arms:
Tie the yarn on one side of the skirt at the gathering, chain 12 and attach at the other side.
Work all of the ends of yarn back into the work.
Wings:
ch 10.
Row 1 - sc. (9 stitches) ch 1.

About Crochet
Crochet is placing a slip knot on a hook, hooking the yarn and pulling it through the slip knot, and then hooking the yarn and pulling another loop through that one and so on until the chain is the desired length. The work can then be turned at the end of the chain to work stitches along the chain. The stitches range from the basic single crochet and double crochet stitches to more complicated and elaborate designs.
Basic Stitches Described
Single Crochet - To do a single crochet stitch on a chain as described above, the hook is inserted in the second chain from the hook to start the row. The yarn is then hooked (called a yarn over - YO) and drawn through, hooked again and drawn through both loops. After making the first single crochet, the stitches are done in every chain after the first.
Double Crochet - YO before inserting the hook. Insert the hook, YO, pull through. There are now 3 loops on the hook. YO and draw through 2 loops. YO and draw through the 2 remaining loops.
There is no written record of crochet patterns before the 1800s when the first crochet patterns were published. Prior to that, the art of crochet was passed down from generation to generation, working from samples of finished work. Today, there are many wonderful printed patterns available along with a wide variety of types and colors of yarn.
The art of crochet is interesting and enjoyable, a very pleasurable, yet practical hobby for making clothing and accessories, decorative and useable items for the home, holiday decorations, and thoughtful gifts for friends and family.
