How to Test for a Torn Rotator Cuff

If you are not sure if you have a torn rotator cuff or not there are a few tests you can do with another person to give you a good idea.

  • Arm drop test - Hold your arm out straight at 90 degrees with your thumb pointing down. Start lowering your arm slowly. If you find it drops suddenly then you probably have a rotator cuff tear.
  • Try to raise your arm in front of you about shoulder height and point your thumb points toward the floor by turning your wrist. Get a friend to push your arm down while you try to resists. If you have a torn rotator cuff you will find it very difficult to hold your arm steady against the push.
  • Do the same as the previous exercise but with the palm facing up for a different angle but with similar results.
  • Bend your elbow while holding your arm at your side. Make sue your wrist is turned so that your thumb points toward the ceiling. Get a friend to push your hand towards your stomach while you try to resist. If you have a rotator cuff problem then you will find it difficult to resist.

Pain is different to not being able to resist though. A lack of strength characterizes a torn rotator cuff as well as the terrible pain while a more muscular pain will still have you strong against pushing the arm in those circumstances. This is by no means an exhaustive test but should give you food for thought and more knowledge when seeing a doctor.
