How to Declutter to Move into an RV Full-Time

Daunted by the Thought of Downsizing?

What is keeping you from living the life of your dreams? For a lot of people, it's their 'stuff.'

I have been living full-time in an RV for three years. The biggest obstacle to fulfilling my dream of full-time RVing was my hoarding tendencies. When I meet people who want to full-time, the most common worry is "How do I get rid of all my stuff?".

I triumphed over my hoarding tendencies and seized the life of my dreams. Let me show you how I did it.

Your Stuff Is Not Your Life

And it can stop you from living

Stuff takes up a lot of energy; emotional, physical, and spiritual. It can remind you of things you'd rather forget. You have to maintain it, replace it, clean it, move it. It can stop you from fulfilling your potential.

There is nothing inherently wrong with stuff. There is only something wrong with you if you let a physical possession decide for you how you will live your life.

I gave up so many opportunities because I had a household to maintain. When I began the long, often painful, and ultimately rewarding decluttering journey that led me to full-time RVing, I set my soul free.

Sorting It Out

Sorting It OutMy ebook Sorting It Out: From packrat to full-time RVer is a chronicle of my five-year quest to subdue my hoarding tendencies.

What does it mean to be organized?

How do you start a decluttering journey?

What is the process to triumphing over clutter?

How do you overcome barriers to successful decluttering?

How do you deal with special challenges, those items that are particularly difficult to declutter?

Why bother doing this at all?

Make Room For What Matters

I made room for doing jigsaw puzzles!Examine your home and life today. What activities that you enjoy do you spend the bulk of your time doing? Things that support these activities should probably come with you in the RV.

You can pursue almost any hobby in an RV. I know a lot of quilters who are worried they won't be able to quilt anymore or woodworkers who will miss their shop. Pick an RV that will give you space for your projects, such as a class C with a rear bedroom or a toyhauler, and make room for your toys, even if it means stuffing the overflow into the wardrobe and getting rid of most of your clothes. Who cares if you're going to be wearing the same pair of jeans and two t-shirts day in and day out? You're traveling around! You won't see most of these people again!

The Secret of Life

the author standing in the Arctic OceanThere is a secret of life. I discovered it while my father was dying and I'm going to share it with you.

This secret is that the only thing in this life that matters is the only thing we can take with us when we die: our memories.

Full-time RVing is a lifestyle that constantly challenges you and exposes you to new things. It enables you to build a rich memory bank of memories instead of being caught in the haze of the same old routine.

It was only a few short years ago that I thought I had reached a point in my life when it was too late to fulfill dreams, especially those of visiting the far north. There just wasn't going to be enough money. I didn't realise that what I needed was less stuff, not more money.

I got rid of the stuff, saw my income drop by a third, and, just like that, I was standing knee-deep in the Beaufort Sea. And that wasn't the only dream I realised after successfully decluttering and hitting the road. There are days when I feel like the richest woman in the world.

I congratulate you on your downsizing to an RV! You have done something most people only dream of doing! Just over a year ago, my husband and I sold everything we owned, except for our computers, clothes, and Harmony, the tabby cat, and moved to Florida. It was the best decision we ever made! We rent a 2 BR condo and have furnished it using craigslist. Everything bought for the condo had to meed three criteria: Did we need it? Would we use it? Did we love it? If the answer was no to any of these questions, it was not for us. The result? We live in a lovely home, surrounded by beautiful things we cherish and use every day! Heaven!

When moving continents you also realize how little you really need in life. Would probably be good for me to move into an RV, I definitely have hoarding tendencies!

Living the dream for sure, and to me the best part is you do indeed get to make the choices.

Ah, my thoughts? Well, I tried just this for 3 months last year ... October, November, December, January ... and then we had record-breaking LOW temperatures and I ran out of propane. For one week, I weathered 15-18 degree F temperatures outside in a fifth wheel in Brooksville, FL. I really LOVE the idea and haven't ruled it out, but wondering about changing out those heavy propane tanks.
