How to Decorate Hallway Walls

Ranked #18,991 in Home & Garden, #275,148 overall

While you use your hallway to get from one room to another, you may never bother to think about decorating it. But you do spend a lot of time traveling through it, so you may want to touch it with a little of your decorating magic. While it is true that many hallways have very limited floor space, do not let that deter you from making your space interesting. It does not matter how large or small your house or hallway is, buy adding a little of your personality to the space, you can make it feel like a coherent piece of your home.

Color, Light and Artwork

Color and Light - As you are designing your hallway space, make sure that you supply adequate lighting throughout it. While you can place light colors on the wall and a white ceiling to open up the space visually, you will want to also make sure that you have proper lighting for the space. Good overhead lights are essential for everyday use, and wall sconces for ambient lighting offer a warm glow to the space when practical lighting isn't needed.

Artwork - While you do not have a lot of floor space in your hallway, you generally do have ample wall space on which to display artwork or photos. You may choose abstract wall hangings on large wall, or for smaller spaces you may opt for a grouping of fleur de lis decor. Then you can use your lighting to spotlight your artwork for a dramatic effect in your hallway.

No Dumping - Many times a hallway is full of stuff that is headed to another room. Unfortunately, it is one of the first things to greet guests when they are visiting your home. So take some time to create some appropriate storage for the things that are commonly dumped in your hallway. If it is coats and boots, invest in a coat rack. If it is little items that are heading down the hall the next time you make the trip, have a basket placed at either end of the hall that you can take with you the next time you pass by.

Design and Furniture

Seamless Design - Generally your hallway is an extension of whatever rooms it opens onto. However, if you have a very large hallway space, you also have the option of making the hallway its own space. As you are decorating your hallway, you need to judiciously edit your elements, because it is not an entire room, and you run the risk of simply cluttering the space.

Furniture - While you may want to include some furniture in your hallway be careful not to overdo it. A small side table with a mirror hanging over it, or a simple storage bench are perfect for hallway furnishings; depending on the size of your space, you may be able to fit in additional pieces. However, this is definitely a case of where less is more.

Scale Matters - As you are selecting pieces to include in your hallway pay attention to scale. Whether it is the artwork, furniture or wall patterns, make sure that your scale is consistent throughout to keep the space feeling harmonious.

By adding a little of your personality to your space, you can make your hallway as much a part of your house as any room in it. Then by adding functional furniture and accessories, you may also help your house stay a little neater and function just a little better, all while looking gorgeous.
