How to Decoupage Glass Plates

Materials Required for Decoupage:

Fabric (make sure that the fabric print is good).

Here I have used fabric with special indian motifs which is very popular in Rajasthan.

Clear Glass Plates

Decoupage Glue

Scissors

Tooth Pick

Craft Knife

Process to Decoupage:

1. Clean the glass plate properly using warm soap water. Dry the glass plate properly so that there is no water left on the surface of the plate.

2. Prepare your fabric by deciding the exact design you want on your plate. It is best to pre wash the cloth and iron it.

3. For easy cutting of the fabric, you can apply decoupage glue on the fabric and let it dry. It will be easier to cut the fabric as paper.

4. Once the fabric is ready, apply glue on the back side of the glass, or if you wish, you can put glue on the front side of the fabric and press the fabric on the glass, starting from the center. Use your fingers to press it smoothly towards the corner and make sure that there are no bubble formed. Put enough glue so that the fabric can be easily pressed and use wet fingers to evenly press the fabric.

5. Let the decoupage glue dry and then keep on applying more layers of glue till you are satisfied with the finish look.

6. In case the fabric was not cut properly as per the glass shape, you can use a craft knife to cut the extra fabric from the plate and give a clean and smooth edge finish to your glasses.

7. When the plate is completely dry, you can apply acrylic paint of your choice if you wish to add color to the backside of the plates. However in my projects, I have kept the fabric as it is, as the fabric itself was looking so good and it gives a painting like effect. Both the front side and backside looks wonderful. 8. No further steps now :) Your masterpiece is complete and let your guests admire it now. Display it in your favorite room. You can also use the plate for serving food items.

* Make sure that these plates are not put in the dishwasher. You need to hand wash them for making them long lasting.

Though I personally prefer to use fabric rich in design, decoupage on glass plates can be also done using paper. Usually the traditional method of paper decoupage is using bits of paper and cover the entire surface with the paper pieces. But in the glass plate decoupage, we use just one piece of paper so that the design is seen beautifully.
