I thought so too that displaying mug shot online is going against human rights. Well, there'd be no harm if we educate ourselves with the basic laws.

It's a scary thought that there is legally nothing stopping the use of these images on the internet! I've never been arrested and therefore don't have this problem but the very fact that details such as these aren't protected by the police is a blatant farce! Even if a person is found innocent of any crime the publication of their mugshots can cause them long standing problems.

How do you know the website won't put the mugshot back up? That's a lot of money that I don't have, trying to start life over is very hard let alone websites plastering all my business out there. This has just taken the sun out of my sky :(

InternetReputation.com specializes in online privacy and security. The firm you hired likely was only a reputation management firm. InternetReputation.com uses reputation management combined with unpublishing to remove mugshots and other information from the Internet.

1950's era public records law in a 21st Century era of unlimited information exchange. Laws that were written so newspaper reporters could trudge down to the courthouse and get access to the mugshots of a (nationally or locally) notorious criminal have been perverted in the internet age so now mugshots are a source of voyeuristic entertainment.

The narrative of "WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE YOU...": does not work in this situation.

These laws need to be updated. We cannot control the internet, but we can control what information governments release on the internet. It's high time our society got very serious about preserving privacy in the information age... and for the record, no, I don't have a mugshot online.

This whole mug shot thing is kind of scary to a point where things are just getting weird out there in the world. Overall, I guess google knows about it too

It is really sad what this world is becoming. I think a mugshut or arrest record should be made public if it is a sexual or violent offense, as I would like to know if a sexual offender is near my house and children. However, companies making money and violating privacy rights, should be against the law. Great lens! I will definitely be sharing it.

I haven't heard about this until my brother complained to me one day. Years ago, he did something dumb and was arrested. He found out that his mugshot was online and it was costing him being able to land a job. This should be against the law and it's sad that companies are profiting from this!

I never thought about the negative implications that could have on a persons life. It seems to me like mug shots being published would be a major privacy violation.

The problem doesn't really steam from the websites putting it online, this information is already being made available by the county sheriffs offices.

I have a problem with peoples mug shots being put online. It isn't really necessary and there are many people who do something dumb and now they are going to be punished for the rest of their lives when people Google them. I've never been in any type of trouble but it just bothers me that a person can mess up once and its all to easy to find reminders of it online.

Now with the Internet, no information is safe. Luckily there is a solution for people to get these removed. To play devils advocate, sometimes it might be safe to know people have been arrested. i.e. sex offenders, murders, violent offenders. Googling a potential babysitter and finding out they are a sex offender by seeing their mugshot online could be very helpful. For people that are no sex offenders and have made it right, there is a solution to having their information removed.

It's all about money, these mugshot websites are just out to generate revenue for themselves, this is such a racket its disgusting. If this isn't illegal it surely should be, this post says there is laws protecting these websites, what about the laws the protect the people who have been slandered on these sites. I can't find a job or even go on a date without someone Googling me and saying they saw my mugshot from 10 years ago! I emailed Google, I emailed the site owner no one will help. How can you remove these mugshots?

I don't get how it can be legal for Google to let people put my personal mugshot and picture on the Internet? This is clearly a violation of my rights. My case was dismissed and the charges were dropped, this is ruining my life. Give me a break, TAKE IT DOWN!
  • Internetreputation Sep 20, 2011 @ 12:19 am | delete
Google has a pretty strict policy on what they will and will not regulate. They will take down social security #'s, credit card information and things like that. These mugshot pictures are considered public record, so right now it is legal for them to be posted.
