Learn How to Discipline Cats and What Will Never Work

Say you're just getting home after a long day. All you want to do is sit down in a comfortable chair, relax and unwind. But when you open the door you see the house is a mess. A plant is knocked over, dirt is everywhere, your favorite pair of jeans have had holes clawed into them and there's a torn up roll of toilet paper strewn all over the bathroom and hallway. Your cat was the only one in the house all day.

If you have just witnessed your cat in an aggressive state, fear may be the first thought that enters into your mind. Many cat owners have questions about the secrets of catsespecially when they witness their cats attack. Many owners want to know if something is wrong with their cat or if it is a danger to those around him or her. In all honesty, you will find it depends.

First, it is important to know that cats, even domestic cats, can be considered predators. The ancestors of your cat relied on hunting to survive. This is not a trait or a characteristic that just disappears. Your beloved cat will also have that need and desire to hunt. This is one of the many reasons why cats occasionally display aggressive behavior.

Concerning natural aggressive behavior, many pet owners are concerned, as they provide their cat with enough food. It doesn't matter how well fed your cat is, he or she will always occasionally feel the need to hunt. For example, has your cat ever killed a bird, mouse, or another rodent? If so, did they consume their kill? Chances are not. This is proof that cats don't just attack for the sake of food.

From experience I can tell you that yelling at a cat is a never the answer. Cats hate loud noises and they're almost always going to run and hide out of fear. One of my cats freaks out whenever there is a thunderstorm! When trying to think of how to discipline cats and what works and what doesn't you always have to understand in advance how a cat is going to react to your disciplinary methods.

Some things that never work are:

1.) Yelling at the cat or making any loud noises.
2.) Raising a hand to them in an aggressive way.
3.) Any physical contact that is meant to scare them no matter how "lightly" you hit them.
4.) Spraying a cat with a water pistol. This one is debatable but I've seen cats that just get use to it or just fear you.

This will assure you that the cat will just end up avoiding you.

Figuring out what works when thinking about how to discipline cats will be by trial and error. There is no universal method of discipline but there is always something that will work for you and your cat. Our pets make us very happy so it should be our job to keep them just as happy as they make us
