Hand Quilting Stitches | How to Hand Stitch a Quilt

Gathering Quilting Stitches From Here and There

Do you hand-stitch your quilts or use a quilting sewing machine? I like the idea of hand-stitching, and find myself searching all over for how to do certain stitches, so thought I'd try to put them all in one place for myself, and for anyone else who would like a one-stop resource.

I know a woman who does all her quilts entirely by hand, including piecing them together, every bit, and admire her work. She says it takes a long time to do, but she finds it to be gratifying. I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge, but I am intrigued.

It is taking me a while to narrow down just how I'm going to approach quilting, I have some supplies to purchase still, do have lots of material that I purchased from an estate of a former quilter..including all the pieces for a quilt carefully cut out and ready to go.

Video #1 - How to Start a Quilt

This is the first series of videos I'm going to add. I like how this woman goes into detail explaining each step. The pieces of her quilt are already stitched together, and in a hoop, ready for stitching. I like how she uses everyday things in the process. Watch how she marks the quilt with chalk pencils.

Video #9 - Quilting Shortcuts - Square by Square Quilting

Simple Square-by-Square Quilt-As-You-Go Method

A mother and daughter teamed up to put together a book about this method of quilting, and I enjoyed the simplicity. This is mostly machine-quilting, but I think the thing that caught my attention was that she used an old Kenmore like I own. I'd like to get a small one sometime, a Singer Featherweight is a popular choice of sewing machine for quilting.

19th Century Crazy Quilt

Here is a print of a crazy quilt, click Late 19th Century Velvet and Embroidered Silk Crazy Quilt if you would like to view more information about this print.

This one looks like it is all material, I've seen fun crazy quilts with beads, buttons, pieces of lace, pieces of whatever you'd like to add to make them as crazy as you like, all detail done by hand, and it doesn't have to be as intricate as this one. Crazy Quilts can tend to be heavy because of all the "doo-dads" added.

I love your lens, it's amazing! When I quilt (or rather make small patchwork items since Mom says we already have enough quilts), I prefer to use handstitches. It takes longer than sewing by machine BUT it's much easier to keep the patch-pieces together when you pin & sew them by. Thanks for all the great information here, I'm featuring your lens on mine: http://www.squidoo.com/making-patchwork-super-easy. Thanks for sharing!

My grandmothers both quilted, but unfortunately, my paternal grandmother died before my parents met and my mom's mom died when I was four. It would have been great to watch them at their quilting. I've made machine-stitched quilts--more like comforters. This is a great lens on stitching! Might have to give it a try... Thank you!

I started making a completely hand stitched quilt when I was in high school.. I put it aside and my mother started working on it. Over the years, we completed all of the pieces and decided to put them together. We made the quilt and then took it to my grandmother's house (she was a great quilter back in the day and still had her giant quilting frame)... and my grandmother and I sat and completed that entire quilt by hand. It was a beautiful experience doing that with my grandmother, and putting the back and the batting in. I still have that quilt now, all the way in Kuwait!!! :)

My quilting skills are very basic, I'm a knitter and seamstress, but my grandma did tons of quilting in her younger years. Each of us 8 grandkids got hand pieced and quilted full size quilts from her...absolutely amazing! They all used a lot of scraps from fabric that had been from our moms' old clothes or quilts made by their grandmas. Now, I'm inspired to give it another try!

My daughter-in-law does beautiful machine quilting, but my grandmother made quilts all the time by hand stitching. I am looking for a how-to for the chicken track stitch, a stitch used in the place of hand tied knots when doing the faster, simpler "tied" quilt. I remember watching my mom do this, and even learned how, but 40 years later, I need a reminder.

My grandmother's quilt was in disrepair so I cut a good square and framed the quilt piece. The nice part was the colors were just right for the room and the frame was an antique frame my father refinished. This is my favorite wall hanging in the room.

Great lens! I need to get back into quilting! I always hand quilt because I'm not sure how to use my old machine for quilting. Plus, there's something very cool about doing it the same (essentially) way that people have been doing it for years. This has turned into a very long comment but I want to add that you have been blessed by a SquidAngel and this lens will be featured on my Angel lens. :)

I am very overdue in thanking you on this page for the blessing, thank you so very much!

This is great. If ever I do quilting I'll have to refer to this page. Just not enough time in the day to fit everything in that I want to do!

Quiting is traditional in my family. My mother was only six when her mother died, so what I learned I learned from my aunt. There is a lot I don't know.

Beautiful lens! I've made some quilt tops, and my mom finished the quilts. It's been years ago though.

I'm not a quilter, but my mom is. I think her favorite is making baby quilts every time we have a new addition to our family. Great lens.
