How To Do Social Networking For Entrepreneurs

If you think social networking is for kids not business, you haven't checked it out lately! Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter can add to your small business' bottom line in ways you may not have thought of before.

If your small business focuses on business to business (B2B) then LinkedIn may be your best bet, with Facebook coming up a hard second. If you focus on business to consumer (B2C) then Facebook can be a lead bonanza for you! I have heard statistics like only 12% of small businesses have any presence and I can guarantee that most of them have NO IDEA what to do to get leads.

Twitter is the news darling of the moment and does help drive traffic to your website BUT like everything else, you get results only for posting great content. It is not a magic bullet that takes no work.

Facebook for Small Businesses

how to generate leads with facebook

Facebook has recently made some changes that are VERY benificial to entrepreneurs! The new facebook page format is super conducive to getting the word out about your business (small business marketing facebook page example).

Facebook pages allow you to post information about your business and industry without allowing anyone else to message your entire list (like they can with groups). It also allows you post events that you can invite your customers (friends) to!

All this and over 200 million active users makes facebook a great place to spend some of your social networking time.

LinkedIn for Small Businesses

LinkedIn is a VERY good platform for business to business marketing. There is MUCH less resistance to asking for referrals or talking about what your company does (same rules apply though - NO HARD SELLING!) All these social networks are about putting your company's products and services where people are talking about a need.

The absolute easiest way to add people to your network is by joining groups. That gives you instant access to all the other members of the group. You can also post events on your LinkedIn profile. I have enjoyed creating polls and have gotten some good market insight through them!

Twitter for Small Businesses

how to generate leads with Twitter

I have a confession to make - I have not been able to track if I have any closed business from Twitter. I DO know that they send traffic my way (I have my blogs all linked to automatically post to Twitter via RSS feed). That having been said, if you are trying to understand the allure of Twitter, get over it! NO ONE understands Twitter and why it works, it is like electricity, it is just there working for your business and you don't need to understand it!
