What is Vision Therapy?
Vision Therapy (VT) may be best described as physical therapy for the eyes. Many children may need these eye exercises to help them reach their full potential in school. However, many VT programs cost several thousand dollars and may not be covered by health or vision insurance. Children may often be misdiagnosed as having a learning disability when all they really need is vision therapy. Note: a child may be tested to have 20/20 vision, but their eyes may not be working as needed to complete reading tasks in school. Problems such as visual tracking or convergence insufficiency will not show up in a typical vision screening. Here are some home-based activities that you can do with your child to assist with eye strengthening and physical coordination. Most of these vision therapy exercises are of little or no cost. These are just a sampling of vision therapy exercises; for more ideas, see the links below.
Tip #1 - Mazes
Kids love mazes, and having your child do several daily will increase their visual tracking abilities and their plan ahead and problem solving skills. Books of mazes are available in most magazine sections of grocery stores or drug stores or may be found free to download , from the web.

Tip #2 - Line Tracking
Similar to mazes, these activities force the child to maintain attention and follow a line from one point to another, amid a tangle of other lines, exercising ocular motor ability. The child may do this with either just his eyes or with a pencil. Samples of line tracking exercises may often be found in children's' activities books.
Tip #3 - Snow Angels
This activity has the child think then react to a given set of commands. The activity will get more challenging as child will have to coordinate movement in upper/lower parts of his body. Have child lie on floor. On command, the child will move just arms, legs, or both. For example, say "Angel Arms" and child will move arms only (as if making an angel in snow). Then have them do legs. Then both arms and legs. Next, have them do just the right side of their body, then left. Next, have them alternate their left arm/right leg, and vice versa. Many variations can be done with the snow angel exercise.
Tip #4 - Perfection Game
The game Perfection is a wonderful tool for home vision therapy. The game entails the child, under a one minute timer, to replace all shapes back into their matching holes on the game board before the time is up and the board ejects all the pieces. This game exercises hand-eye coordination and visual memory. Your child will have such fun they will not even realize they are eye exercising! Perfection can be found in most department stores.
