Styles of Fantasy NASCAR Games
Fantasy NASCAR games come in a few different flavors. The three most popular types are:
- Fantasy NASCAR Draft: This type of fantasy NASCAR game is like many other types of fantasy sports games like football or baseball. You 'draft' a team of NASCAR drivers usually a week or two before the NASCAR season starts.
If you 'draft' a driver, he is yours and no other team owner can have him. After the season starts you can 'drop' or 'trade' your drivers and replace him with drivers that are still available (free agents) or make a trade with another team owner. - NASCAR Driver Groups: This type of fantasy NASCAR game is played by assigning all the available drivers into different groups. Some fantasy NASCAR games (like Yahoo!) divide drivers up into three groups they call 'A', 'B', & 'C'. The top 10 or so drivers are in the 'A' group. The next segment of say 10 - 15 mid-level drivers are in the 'B' group. And, the lowest tier drivers are in the 'C' group.
This is a real popular way to play fantasy NASCAR. If you join up with a group of friends this is usually the style of play used. Lot's of fantasy NASCAR games organized off-line will split the groups of drivers up even further into 'D', 'E' and 'F' groups as well. This ultimately makes it even harder because picking the right driver from these bottom groups adds a big level of complexity and uncertainty.
Every fantasy NASCAR owner playing is required to select and 'make active' a set number of NASCAR drivers from each of these groups to make up their team for the race. You don't 'own' a driver in this type of fantasy NASCAR game play, so the same drivers may be picked by all the owners. - Fantasy Salary Cap: In this type of fantasy NASCAR game each driver starts out with a 'cost' based on their performance the previous year. As a fantasy NASCAR team owner, you are given a 'salary cap' (usually a million dollars) that you can spend to 'buy' a group of drivers.
After each race a driver's 'cost' will go up or down based on how they did in the race. So, if you pick up David Ragan at a low price (becasue he did terrible in 2009) and then he comes out gangbusters and does well, that will be to your advantage becasue his 'cost' will go up, but you will have 'bought' him at a low prices.
My favorite 'salary cap' style game that I have been playing for many years is ESPN's Stock Car Challenge.
How to Prepare for Your Fantasy NASCAR Draft
- Use a fantasy NASCAR cheat sheet to organize for your draft. You need some form of a plan on draft day. Drafting by the seat of your pants isn't usually a rule for success in fantasy NASCAR.
- Participate in a fantasy NASCAR mock draft with a bunch of your potential players, in chat rooms or NASCAR forums.
- Be for sure you understand the basics of fantasy NASCAR games, the rules of the particular game your playing, and method of scoring thoroughly before drafting your team of drivers.
- Seek out NASCAR portals for NASCAR fantasy picks advice from others not in your league. It always helps to get a second opinion before you lock in your draft choices going into the season.
