How to Draw A car On Paper: Tips and "No No's"

It's hard to show you guys how to draw cars on paper effectively without making a video and I have no idea how to do that stuff! So I'm just going to give you some tips and advice on what to do and some of the no no's of car drawing. Let begin!

1. Tools:

- Make sure you have a good set of pencils, varying the lightness so you can create the highlight effects that make a car look real. I can't count how many have asked me why their car looks bad when they've just tried to do the whole thing with one pencil they found lying round the house.

- The contrast in tones created by the different pencils is what is used to create the shiny metallic surfaces of the car and the dark rubber of the tires. Also a ruler is very helpful to get your lines right and blending stumps to smooth out your shading.

Always sharpen your pencil! Great looking cars look the way they do because of their sharp lines, you can't do that with a blunt pencil! :)

2. Drawing Position:

- Sitting on the couch on a wobbly surface won't cut it. Plop yourself on a nice flat desk and have something smooth under the paper for best results.

- When your drawing, make sure your not tilting your head while you do so. This offsets your drawing completely and it will be tilted badly to one side.

3. Grids

- It's very hard to get proportions right, even the best artists struggle with it. That's why it's important to use a grid and work square by square. Doing this enables you to compare the sizes of your lines and makes your jobs alot easier if you want to draw in perspective.

4. Patience

- I remember when I was first learning how to sketch a car, I would spend about an hour and then look at it, decide it was terrible and throw it away. BAD IDEA! You have no idea how much your sketch will improve if your patient enough to just keep fixing up lines and shading until your happy with it.

- This is the best tool you can have when drawing, spend enough time and you'll be able to make your car look fantastic!

5. Foundations

- You shouldn't start using heavy lines and shading until you have the initial outline sketch done and looking nice.

- First create your body sketch in a very light shade. Then using the grid method, start to fix up the drawing square by square until you've got the look your after.
