How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player

Draw a cartoon basketball player with this easy to follow step-by-step tutorial.
This tutorial will show you step-by-step how to draw a picture of a cartoon Basketball Player. The game of basketball originated in America although the game's creator was a Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith.
This is one of my more in-depth drawing tutorials. A person should be able to follow it relatively easy using only the pictures. Although written account is given of each step, hopefully you wouldn't need them, but if you get stuck along the way they may come in handy.
In my written directions I use left and right side for me looking at my drawing not his right or left.

How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #1
Start with drawing a large circle for your basketball player's head. Next draw a curved line coming down from the head for the right side of his body. You should now have what looks like a balloon being held on a string in a gentle breeze. Draw another curved line for the left side of his body. Your lines for the body should be slightly shorter than the height of your basketball player's head. How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #2
For his left arm start drawing a line where his head and body meet. Angle your line downwards at about a 60-degree angle. His arm should be about half the length of his body. Draw another line for the bottom of his arm making sure it narrows towards the wrist. For the right arm start just outside were his head and body meet draw a line extending downwards keep your line parallel to your basketball player's body. At the elbow have his arm bent so it runs parallel to the ground (180-degrees). Draw the bottom of his arm once again remembering to narrow it towards the wrist.

Your basketball player's right hand is nothing more than a big fat letter "L" flipped onto its side. You may have to play around with it a little to get the hand to form around the circle for the basketball. The hand meeting the basketball is the most difficult part of this tutorial everything else should be simple compared to it. How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #4
Start drawing your basketball player's face with the left eye. It's a simple circle slightly to the right of center. His right eye is just a little bit higher and should almost touch the inside of the circle for his head. His nose is a curved line bowing upwards drawn below his eyes and centered between them.
His mouth should angle up more to the left and have the dimple on that side.
The ear is a 3/4 circle draw just below the center of his head. Add a couple bowed lines to the inside of it to give it some depth.
How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #5
Draw the left hand. I kept mine simple only giving him three fingers and a thumb. If you run into problems drawing a hand remember it's just a cartoon caricature and a mitten will work just as well. For your basketball player's shirt the left arm hole starts at the top of the arm just right of were the arm meets the head and bows downwards ending under the arm. The neck for the shirt is a long half oval. The shirt should end at a distance little more than halfway down the body.
How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #6
His shorts start right under the line for the bottom of his shirt and should only be about half as long as his shirt. His shorts should also bow out towards the bottom. This will give the illusion of knees without having to actually draw them. The left side of his shorts should be drawn like a parallelogram with the right most line not extending all the way to the top. Draw the right side slightly shorter than the left remembering to bow the bottom outwards. How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #7
His shoes are a small letter "b" reverse it for the left foot. How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #8
Add some finishing touches hair, lines on the basketball, eyebrows, ect. How To Draw A Cartoon Basketball Player #9
