How to draw a pumpkin
How to draw Thanksgiving pumpkin with Gimp
I'll show you how to draw Thanksgiving pumpkin with Gimp, the GNU Image Manipulation Program. Gimp is free raster graphics editor and we can download it here.
After our pumpkin is done, we can use the design in our e-store, in Zazzle for instance, to make numerous products. You can see some examples in this lens.

In this tutorial I'm going to draw a pumpkin on a photo of a pumpkin.
I found a public domain photo of pumpkins, and croped and resized it.
It was really easy with Wacom Bamboo Tablet.

Wacom Bamboo Connect Pen Tablet (CTL470)
Amazon Price: $62.00 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
Recently I bought Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet. Before I was using computer mouse for all my drawings and tutorials, but with tablet it is much easier.
I bought a small one because I don't have a lot of space on my desk and more experienced graphic designers advised me to. For a beginner small tablet is better. Let's learn to work with small one and then buy bigger one.
I wasn't sure which one to buy, just pen tablet or pen & touch tablet. I read a lot of reviews, but the only useful thing for me at the moment would be eraser on pen & touch tablet. I really wanted to buy it, because it seemed to me like a real pencil, but I decided that simple Undo will do for now.
All experienced graphic designers told me I'll need some time to adjust to it, about a week or two. So don't be disappointed if it is strange at first. When I go back to mouse after using pen tablet it is like going from barefoot to ski shoes.
We can use it for drawing, for handwritten notes on our greeting cards, for photo editing... I even found some reviews on web, where people like it so much they are using it instead of mouse all the time.
All in all, I love my new tablet. I just wish I would have more time to use it.

And this is our croped and resized photo.

And now we start with our pumpkin. We'll use Paths tool, it looks like this.

When we are placing the points and correcting the line the Paths tool must be in design mode.
And when we are draging lines between points the Paths tool must be in edit mode.
And if we really don't like something we did, we use Undo.

We are going to place points around each rib of the pumpkin.

There can be many points or only a few and later we can correct the lines.

After we place all the points around the rib and correct the lines, we press Selection from Path and Stroke path to color the line. I used color #f47626.

We color the whole pumpkin's rib with Edit - Fill with FG color. I used color #f47626.

After coloring we use Filters - Decor - Add Bevel to get beveled edges.

We continue and do the same with all the ribs.

And for pumpkin's stem we do the same, place the points, color the lines, color the whole stem and at the end bevel edges.
Here I used color #508050.

And here I used color #0b2f0b.

Our pumpkin is finished. Now we just cut out the background and leave it transparent for now.

Our pumpkin needs a little rotating towards left, we do that with Rotate tool, which looks like this.

Now we can change our pumpkin's color. We go to Colors - Color Balance - Adjust color levels and change Magenta to -86 to get red pumpkin.

And here the same, Colors - Color Balance - Adjust color levels, but this time we change Magenta to 89 to get yellow pumpkin.

Now let's create new image, and fill the background with color #ffb57e.

We open our picture of pumpkin with File - Open as layers and add our pumpkin.

Now we can change the shape and size of a pumpkin. We can play as much as we want to get the design we want.

We do that with Scale tool.

And we can flip the pumpkin with Flip tool if we want to...

- You are very creative in Gimp. I think I'd find it really hard, especially manipulating my mouse, which I use right-handed, but don't have fine motor control for 'drawing' as I'm left-handed. :) Admire what you were able to do, though. :) Congrats on being featured on the Squidoo Fall Harvest Monsterboard
