Used car buying tips

3 more tips on buying a used cars under 2000 dollars

Be Practical
If you're looking for cars under $2000 you can be pretty sure that it's not going to have certain amenities that a brand new automobile off the lot will have. Observe the over all condition and shape of the car. It might not be a good angle to convince the seller they should drop the price of the car because the floor mats are missing. Pay attention to how the car responds, stops, starts and sounds. Function not fashion is something to consider. Is this car going to run and last me a couple years?

Don't Forget About Newspapers
Now-a-days there are a lot of options when looking for a used car. Not only do you have Google, Craigslist, eBay and on an on but there is also the traditional media of news papers that are still widely used. Don't pigeon hole yourself by only looking for a car deals online. A newspaper classified section might hold a whole wealth of automobiles with in your budget that you can't find online. There is a certain segment of the population that is not so savvy when it comes to internet shopping. Often times it's easier for someone to call up the local paper and tell them what they would like to have them print.

Always, Always, Always Ask for a Test Drive
A deal over the phone or on paper that sounds too good to be true usually is. Always ask for a test drive. You'll be able to hear if there are any grinding gears. You'll know if the car has a hard time starting. You'll be able to test the brakes and tires. You'll get a better idea of how it performs in stop-and-go traffic.

1 Extra Tip
Here's an extra tip when test driving your used car. When driving by buildings or low guard walls roll down the window and see if you can hear anything, but the engine and tires. Is there any clicking or ticking noises? It'll be more apparent when echoed off of a non-moving object.

The last car I bought I was desperate - which is a lousy place to start the purchase process. I am still paying on that car. Truly the way to go is to save a little at a time and pay cash - leaving enough in your bank account to cover the inevitable repairs and maintenance that comes with owning a car. Pinned to my Thrifty Living board.

I just bought a geo metro with a blown head gasket for $250... $50 later for a head gasket and I am getting 45 MPG between LA and Bakersfield. Also came with a scangauge to readout the gas mileage in real time and read engine coads.

I have a few friends in the car business(salesmen, managers) that have given me a very good deal on previous purchases. I think building a relationship with your salesmen and dealing a reputable dealership with a track record is the best insurance for buying a reliable and affordable transportation.
  • SereneSea Oct 13, 2011 @ 10:56 pm | delete
Good tips, after going through all the search you don't want to end up with a lemon car.

I wish I would have had this lens a couple of years ago. I was having the hardest time finding a car for around $3,000 to be used for a secondary vehicle for the household. It was such a pain. I ended up selling the car we bought within a year on Craigslist. Erg. Anyway, excellent lens. :)
