Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast Lumps

Breast LumpsSymptoms of breast cancer vary from patient to patient but some common symptoms include breast lumps, change in shape and size of the breast, change in the surface of the breast, discharge from a nipple. These changes do not always have breast pain associated with the changes. The changes are likely to be gradual and therefore being aware of what is normal for you will help you identify any changes early. Also, the development of these symptoms may have other less serious causes so it is always best to get any such changes checked by a physician.

Breast Awareness

The aim of Breast awareness is to encourage women to become more aware of their breasts and have a clear idea of what is normal for them. Women who are breast aware are more likely to notice irregular changes in their breasts than women who do not carry out a regular Breast Awareness routine.

Breast Screening Programme

NHS Breast Screening Programme and Cancer Research UK, sets out a five-point plan for women in order to be Breast Aware.

  1. Know what is normal for you.

  2. Feel and look at the breasts carefully.

  3. Women should know what changes to look for.

  4. Immediately report any changes to a physician.

  5. Regularly attend breast screening when called (usually if aged 50 or over).
