Top four questions to ask when choosing a dance studio for your child

When searching for a dance studio for your child, there are a number of questions you should ask your self before choosing the right one for you and your family. Having a great dance studio experience will not only inspire your child with the gift of dance, it will bring joy and happiness to your entire family.

1. Are all instructors continuing their education in dance?

It is important that dance instructors continue their education by attending workshops, classes, and teacher's training courses on a regular basis. Just as the world is ever changing, dance is too! It is important to continue your training in the classic forms of dance like ballet, tap, and jazz . But, instructors should also be trying new things and new styles of dance. Newer forms of dance like fushion, krumping, popping/locking, and breaking dancing can be seen on a regular basis in mainstream media and television

2. Is the dance studio promoting age appropriate music, costuming, and class material?

When teaching children it is important that everything the kids are exposed to in the dance studio is physically and mentally age appropriate. For example, dancers that are 8 should not be working on the same skills as the 16 year olds. Music played should be free of cursing and any other inappropriate content. Costuming should flatter each child and make them look and feel fantastic. Be careful of the typical "hot pant" and "bra top" trend that most competition studios follow.

3. Is there a strong foundation in ballet and dance technique?

Ballet teaches the fundamental body alignment and technique principles needed to reach the highest level of achievement in dance. Not only does it create a beautiful image of free flowing connected movement, it protects the body and trains the muscles and bones to properly align to create ease when dancing. A strong foundation in ballet is critical to those that would like to further training in disciplines like jazz, tap, acrobatics, pointe, contemporary, hip hop and more.

4. What performing opportunities does the studio provide for your dancer?

Providing optional opportunities to perform and compete are a great way to help complete the full dance experience. A lot of studios have smaller "companies" that perform at local community events and perhaps 1 or 2 competitions a year which is a great way to give your dancer stage time and inspiration to not just dance for High Scores and Platinum trophies. Too much emphasis on competition and winning trophies can be detrimental to your dancers growth as an artist. Dance is an art form and it is the teacher/studios job to guide dancers to become passionate, hard working, humble people/dancers.

I hope these tips help you to find the right dance studio for your child and your family.

A Dance Studio's Advantage - The Floating Professional Dance Floor!

Dance Classes and Lessons at Amanda's Dance CenterAt professional dance studios, they use the "Floating Floor" to guarantee their dancers are using the best floor possible to prevent injury and promote longevity!

Our "Floating" Dance Floor rests on a system of high-density foam and support beams to absorb the shock and impact of regular dance movement and. This benefits students by reducing fatigue and preventing injury that can result from dancing on hard surfaces. The floor is raised and provides "give" when the dancers are practicing grand jumps or jumping repeatedly in jazz or tap.

The top layer of our flooring surface is a professional "marley" floor . This marley floor surface has a certain amount of controlled slip to allow for sliding in dance movement, but is not slippery like common tiles found in most other dance studios.
