Used car buying tips
Things to consider when looking for a used car
Since you're already starting out with a decent budget here are a few tips for making sure you're not buying a lemon and how to find a larger pool of choices by taking advantage of online listings.1. Get pre-approved for a used car loan. How do you know you have 5000 to spend on a used car? Is this money you have saved up? If not see what you can get pre-approved for before heading to the dealership. You might find that you are eligible for a bigger loan at a better rate than you may have thought. If you know this ahead of time you can work out a monthly payment that wont break your budget.
2. Always, always, always get a vehicle history report. You've done all your home work and have finally found the car of your dreams. Make sure it doesn't quickly turn into a nightmare and get a Vehicle history report. At first glance the vehicle may look to be in great condition. A vehicle history report relies on the cars VIN number and will have all the vehicles history including any accidents it had been in. This way you'll know what specifically to look at when you get to the dealer's lot.
3. Have 2 cars in mind when considering your next vehicle. With more than one choice in mind you will be able to do some used car research on a couple vehicles you would be happy with while not providing so many used cars that you forget what makes and models have the perks you are looking for. By limiting your choice down to 2 cars you'll be able to better find out what people are saying about the vehicle you are looking at. If everybody is saying that the year model you have in mind had 3000 recalls in 2010 you can aim your attention at a different model. By limiting the number of cars you're looking at you'll be able to ask more focused questions your used car choice.
Bonus Tip: Looking for a classic car? Don't dismiss classified ads.
If you're looking for a project car don't dismiss classified ads. The printed word is still a viable source for used vehicles. If you're looking for something a little older to fix up you should definitely check out your local paper. Listings here might not live online as some people just aren't comfortable surfing the internet. It's possible that the 57 Chevy on the corner is listed in the local paper, but since the owner retired 10 years ago he may not be a savvy online consumer.

- These buying used car lenses are great. I know many people are scared of the process. Breaking it down into a process makes it manageable. Especially like the part about buying with bad credit. It's a common problem in this economy.
