An important thing to remember is to Never do anything, repair or standard operating, that heats up other electrical connections throughout your xbox. This will eventually permanently destroy your xbox 360 and probably void your warranty.

(In case somebody reading this doesn't know) The actual symptom of the Red Ring Of Death is three lights on the "ring of lights" on the front of the console flash red, but not the upper right quadrant light.

If the solder (which has become brittle) is put under stresses, small hair-line cracks may occurr. These hair-line cracks may obstruct much of the electric current flow and will also result in a weaker solder joint that breaks easily. The "Xbox 360 3 Red Light Fix" which is mentioned earlier shows how to fix this quickly.

On some Xboxes, the manufacturer failed to remove some of the foil that is located on the heat sink. Many "red ring of death" problems can be blamed on this. If you do decide to remove the foil, then the thermal compound has to be reapplied.

Microsoft made their Xbox 360 with lead free solder in order to avoid using lead in products that will be used by children. The problem with lead free solder is that it tends to be more brittle. To make the matter even worse, the incorrect type of lead free solder was used, one that gets extremely brittle with exposure to heat over long periods of time.
