All The Different Techniques - It's A Maze Learning How To Fly Cast
False, Roll, Curve or Serpent - Where do you begin?
Over the centuries proficient fly fishing enthusiasts have managed to come up with a good deal of different fly casting techniques with exotic names. Here's only a few of them. The Serpent Cast
This is a method of casting that allows the line to fall on the water in a series of "S" curves. This allows the fly to float without dragging and is useful when casting across the current or directly down stream.
False Casting
A fancy name that just measn casting the fly back and forward without actually allowing it to land on the water. It should be used to work more line out to achieve the distance you want. More often it is used constantly by those who haven't mastered how to fly cast and they just keep the fly moving in an attempt to make it go where they eventually want. Not much chance catching a fish if you spend half your day doing this!
Roll Casting
With this style of fly casting the line is not lifted from the water for the backcast but is pulled back along the water and then cast forward again. It is a method of casting tha can be used when ther is not sufficient space to allow backcasting or when the wind is too strong to allow a backcast.
If you are a beginner and just learning how to fly cast I would recommend that you don't get fixated on all the different methods of casting. It is best to concentrate on the basics which will bring maximum success before moving on to advanced casting techniques.
For much more detail on different casting methods I have found Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast to be most useful.
A Few Starting Tips On How To Fly Cast
A few basic tips although there are lots more
Try to concentrate on your back cast since with a good strong straight back cast the fore cast is much easier. I really think that it's the back cast that counts.
The best and most consistent way to stop getting "tailing" loops and tangling up your line is to concentrate on casting as smoothly as possible and resist the temptation to cast faster and stronger.
To be able to move your line through the air efficiently on both directions you must be sure to remove the slack before beginning the cast. If you have slack in the line before starting the cast you wont move the line or load the rod until it is gone. That means you are wasting part of your casting stroke.
All the great fly casters are smooth so keep this in mind. Constantly try to be smooth in your cast. This doesn' t mean a constant speed. It should be a smooth acceleration to a quick stop at the end of the cast.
When casting, the line always follows the tip of the rod and when it stops the line travels in the direction that the rot tip was going when you stopped it. Although this is obvious it is surprising how many fly casters seem to forget it.
Remember when learning how to fly cast that timing is the secret. With good timing you will not only increase your distance but also the accuracy. If your timing is bad everything is bad and putting more power into the cast will just make things worse.
Even thought I've been fishing for years I found Read-Up-On.com/How-To-Fly-Cast had lots of tips and advice on fly casting techniques.
