There are various ways to stretch out your ear lobes, my favorite and the most popular being a taper. Large tapers are often cone-shaped, while smaller gauge tapers are sometimes spirals that increase in gauge as you move them further into your ear. Another way to stretch is to wrap jewelry in increasing layers of electrical tape and re-inserting to slowly enlarge the hole.

Disclaimer

I am not a licensed piercer, just a fan of piercings who happens to have 10 holes poked in me and stretched my ears myself. I am sharing my experiences and tips, but piercing causes your body trauma and can be serious business, so please consult a certified piercer for serious questions. XOXO, J

Ear Gauging / Ear Stretching Tips

Advice for Do-it-Yourself Ear Stretching

  • To get started on gauging, work a 16 gauge piece of jewelry into your (fully healed!) pierced ear. Leave in for a few weeks before moving up to a 14 gauge - the size of a standard belly button ring.
  • Stretch your ears after a hot shower, with a bit of Vaseline rubbed onto the hole you are about to stretch. Some lube on the taper can help too, but don't use so much that it's too slippery to push through.
  • Stretch ears *one gauge/size at a time* to avoid tearing, blow outs, excessive blood or pus.
  • For newly stretched piercings, use surgical steel jewelry for the best healing.
  • To clean and numb pain of a new piercing or newly stretched piercing, use BandAid brand Antiseptic Wash. (It comes in a blue bottle with a screw top. Use as directed.)
