There are currently two main types of solar panels - solar panels that generate electricity and solar panels that heat water.The panels can be attached to a roof or walls and come in different forms such as the grey coloured solar tiles that look a lot like roof tiles to transparent panels that you can use on glass (such as conservatories).
Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells which are measured in kilowatt peak (kWp) which means the amount of energy that the cell can generate in full sunlight. The cells are made from layers of semiconducting material and when light shines on these layers it creates an electric field across the layers.
