How to get Along with Difficult People?

Knowing how to get along with difficult people is an advantage for anyone. I know, sometimes dealing with difficult people can be quite a challenge. They can take the form of a boss, a co-worker, or even a friend or a family member. Since these are people you can not disconnect from easily, the challenge of life consists in keeping your sanity and relieve the stress while you try your relationships work better.

After all, there will always be someone who's not quite willing to go along with the plan, someone whose hobby is to turn down all ideas, someone who just doesn't have a positive attitude, someone who will always criticize or blame you, someone who will always find faults in whatever you do, etc. So how do you deal with this kind of people?

Although you can't possibly change their attitude, you definitely can learn how to get along with difficult people in any area of your life. Here are some effective strategies you can try:

1. Put yourself in their shoes and accept them for who they are

Difficult people weren't born difficult. The first thing you need to understand is what makes them difficult.

Is it something in you which triggers some resistant responses, or is it a uniform trait in them?

Their behavior could also be a response to some insecurity, problem or situation they are faced with. Something must have happened to that person in the past, or at least when they tried to get out of bed that morning.

Understand the cause of their behavior, and you will know better what to do or not to do to get them ruffled up.

2. Be friendly and nice - Be the example

Difficult people are tough to change. However, that doesn't mean you can't be the one to change. Sometimes, being the first to exude niceness can make it easier for you to get along with difficult people.

Let's say you and your sister don't really get along well. Even if there's no special occasion, why don't you buy her something nice on the way home? If you feel iffy about buying something especially for her, you can start by buying a cake that you can share with the whole family.

Being nice goes a long way, and small acts of kindness can do wonders. Who knows? Difficult people just might become friendlier to you. At the very least, you'll be able to catch that person off guard.

3. Don't Let Them Get To You.

If you want to know how to get along with difficult people, you must never ever let them get to you.

We often allow the other persons attitude to irritate or annoy us. This becomes obvious to the other person through our tone of voice and our body language. This only fuels a difficult situation.

When dealing with difficult people, stay out of it emotionally and concentrate on listening non-defensively and actively.

A Word of Caution!! - Don't argue with overly aggressive or excessively difficult people. These individuals often have a desire for dissension and thrive on chaos. You probably hate that person's guts; but if you fight fire with fire, your reaction might just be as bad. Try to see the positive sides of the person and ignore the negative qualities.

For example, if the shopkeeper next door is always grouchy at people, don't take it personally. Instead, smile and maybe even buy something from his store. Don't be intimidated by how bad-tempered he is.

No matter how difficult a person is, you won't be able to get along with them unless you know how to shield yourself from their negative influence.

4. Keep Yourself Detached - Don't Take Things Personally

If you find it challenging to follow the aforementioned tips, the only thing left for you to do is keep yourself detached. Whatever that person does or says, don't take it to heart.

Treat that person just like any other and put on a poker face. This way, you won't get into any heated arguments.

According to philosopher Don Miguel Ruiz, difficult people are those kinds of people who live in their own dreams and versions of reality. So, every time a person gives you a hard time, just remind yourself that all he or she says about or against you is just his or her means of projection from a state of incognizance.

Just let everything he or she says enter your right ear and exit the left. Don't take personally any harsh and rude things he or she is saying because the truth of the matter is, they don't really see and care about you; they're just concerned about their own interpretation of things and you.
Difficult people will always be around. But it's up to you to decide whether you will let yourself be affected or not. Follow these tips for dealing with difficult people, and you won't have to worry about losing your cool anymore.

I try my best to be good to everyone, in general. However, there are those that I can't really stand no matter how try I hard. My co-worker is one of those people. But I don't want any office drama so I just sent him an anonymous email via this site called ihatemycoworker.com just so I can relieve myself.

I agree with what you're saying in principle. However, I find it very difficult to be nice to people that I don't like. I will try though. Thanks for sharing.
