How To Get Approved For EPN (Ebay Partner Network)

Background

Several years ago, it was pretty easy for an affiliate to get approved for the Ebay affiliate program. The program was being run through the huge CJ (Commission Junction) affiliate network. All you had to do was sign up at CJ, then apply for the Ebay program. The applications were pretty much rubber-stamped after that.

In April 2008, Ebay closed up their CJ program and opened up their own independantly run 'Ebay Partner Network'

in August 2008, there were widespread reports of affiliates being banned from the EPN Network with no warning. There were more bannings approx. 1 year later.

In September 2009, EPN introduced it's 'Quality Click Pricing' model of calculating commissions. This took it away from a pure affiliate pay-per-sale or pay-per-bid model to something more like a pay-per-click model (with a hidden "quality factor" factored in).

It Gets Tougher

Starting in the Fall of 2008, it's clear that it has become easier and more common to get banned by EPN network. And it is also harder for a new affiliate to get approved. This could be partly attributed to them reacting to 'black hat' affiliates, partly due to their change in commission structure, or something entirely different. Who knows?

Joining thru the Pepperjam network was an option some affiliates used, but that option ended in late 2009.

Tips for Getting Your Site Approved

Here are some suggestions and tips to give new affiliates a higher chance of being approved for ebay.

The website you submit should:

*Be a functioning, established website. Get Approved for EPN

*Be (Self-Hosted) Meaning YOU control the hosting and content of the entire site. You aren't using a free blogging platform, etc.

"Have original, informative, unique content. Especially the homepage. The site should not be just a 'placeholder' waiting for a phpBay or BAN's installation.

*Have content on the site related to items sold on Ebay.

*Have a 'Contact Us' page on your site with accurate contact information, not just a form.

^Have a Privacy Policy

*Website owner be based in USA.

On the application you can also include (comments) any positive information about why you think your site would be a good fit for ebay.

Rejected! / What Next?

So you got the "rejection" e-mail from Ebay? What can you do now?

Well for starters, you can send a reply email.
Be polite, and let them know why you think your website would be a good fit for ebay. Include specifics, such as your search engine traffic details, referrals from authority websites, subscriber information, and anything else you can think of to put your website in a positive light.

Do Not:

*Buy ebay accts. thru 'blackhat' forums. These may have worked for awhile, not now.

*Apply again using the same website and ip address.

Still No Luck?

I've read some good things on webmaster forums recently about Rich over at Syndram Designs. He has created a service that will set up a wordpress site for you that will get you into the EPN affiliate program. The service isn't cheap ($250), but it includes unique articles, template and logo customization, installing the right plug-ins, and keyword and domain research.
