Lower Your Interest Rates and Your Risk of Identity Theft

Monitoring your credit report will help to ensure that you get the best interest rates as well as alert you to possible identity theft.

Because credit agencies may not all have the same information about you, one report won't give you all the information you need.

Get your credit reports and check them for accuracy at least once each year. If they are incorrect you may have to pay unnecessarily high interest rates or even get turned down for loans and credit.

This lens is about how to get and keep better interest rates. The second bonus to doing this it it also helps to protect against identity theft. There is more information available on identity theft help towards the bottom of this page.

Cost For Your Credit Report Is Under $20... BUT

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 allows us to receive one free credit report per year for each of the reporting agencies. These agencies are: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. From the following web site, you can view your reports almost immediately online or they will be mailed to you via USPS within 15 days. go over your checklist

Analyze Your Credit Report

Take a look at your report and immediately let the provider and credit agency know of inaccuracies. It takes about 2 months for closed or paid off accounts to disappear from your history. You can get these removed quicker for a fee. But be careful of companies that say they can do this.

Unrecognized Accounts
If you have accounts listed that you are unfamiliar with, someone may have opened up an account in your name (Identity Theft). Or, this could simply be an accident on the part of the reporting agency. This frequently happens to people who have common surnames.

Ask the credit agency for a dispute form. It's mandatory that the agency investigate your claim and report back to you within 30-days. If the agency can't verify the information that you disputed, they must delete it from your record and notify anyone who has requested your credit report within the past 6-months.

Old Charge Accounts
Too much credit can hurt your rating even if the accounts are not being used. Keep 2 or three of the older accounts open and use them once in awhile. Close the others down.

Protection Against Identity Theft

Identity theft is the fastest growing white-collar crime worldwide. When someone takes pieces of your personal information without you knowing it and uses this information to commit a theft or fraud, this is Identity Theft. The thief is disguised as you and the paper trail leads back to you making it very time consuming to fix.

Once you suspect identity theft, your best bet to limit the damage as much as possible is to take action immediately. Most identity thieves practice the "How Do You Boil A Frog" technique. They start out small to see if they can get away with using your information, then they eventually go for the big bang and take a heap of money.
