How To Get Paid For Your Time On Twitter - A Comprehensive Tell-All Guide For Making Money With Twitter

This guide will show you in detail how you can successfully use Twitter as a powerful word of mouth advertising tool and make some pretty decent money doing so. Every method, program or system discussed in this guide is 100% free and you don't have to sign up to a single email marketing list to get the information you need.

Before we jump into it, we need to be clear on a few things. Making money with Twitter is not as easy as many people will have you believe, many people never manage to make more then a few dollars a month.
In order to make good money with Twitter you need to start with good foundations. You need to be prepared to work hard and you need to do your best to maintain a positive mindset. Failing to do to either of these will pretty much guarantee your not going to make money with Twitter.

Once you understand you need to work hard then your going to need some direction. The ideas, methods and strategies contained in this guide are exactly what I use to make money with Twitter.
My methods and strategies will help you:

When I first started out with Twitter I lost a lot of followers and was abused by people many, many times. This happened because I was using the wrong strategies and it does not happen to me any more. My methods for making money with Twitter were born from 3 years of trial and error. They are ethical and really can help you improve your standing in the online community.

A Little Bit About How People Make Money With Twitter
There are basically two ways you can make money with Twitter. You can promote your own products and services or you can promote other peoples products and services. This guide will focus on promoting other peoples products and services through the use of 3rd party social media marketing services, this practise is often called "paid to tweet".

The methods and strategies in this guide can easily be applied to advertising and selling your own products and services on Twitter.

This Guide Does Not Cover
This guide does not cover how to get paid for following people, how to sell your Twitter account or how to get paid for sending direct messages. Selling your Twitter account is against Twitters terms of service and in general is not a nice thing to do to your followers.

Getting paid to follow people is pointless, it will greatly degrade your Twitter experience and chances are you will only make a couple of dollars at best.

What is twitter?Although Twitter has been around for quite a while now the service still remains a mystery to many people. It never ceases to amaze me at just how many people stop me while I'm talking about Twitter and ask "wait... what is Twitter?".

The team behind Twitter describe the service as:
"a real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting."
Officially Twitter is a micro-blogging service, however I like to describe Twitter as is an instant messaging platform on steroids. If you took MSN Messenger, made the conversations open and turned it into a web service you would get Twitter.

On September 14, 2010 Twitter released some interesting user statistics. They revealed that there are 175 million people that use Twitter and together they send 95 million tweets per day.

In Twitters early days the service was mainly populated by early adopting tech heads and a few smart brands this has since changed dramatically. Twitter is now used by an extremely wide variety of people for an equally wide variety of reasons.

Big Brands and Celebrities
Twitters uptake by brands and celebrities has been huge. Brands use Twitter to communicate directly with customers and some tech savvy brands like @iinet and @ford even use it to improve customer service.

Celebrities use Twitter in almost the same way as brands, they use the service to communicate directly with their fans. This has given celebrities large amounts of power over the main stream media. In the past it was very difficult for celebrities to rectify a situation, now they only need to send out a tweet.

Twitter Basics

The Absolute Basics Of Twitter

Twitter BasicsThis section covers the absolute basics of Twitter. If you are already comfortable with the basic functionality of Twitter you can skip over this section without missing any vital information.

Followers and Following
Twitter isn't like other social networks, friendships don't automatically work both ways. When you follow someone rather then declaring a friendship you are subscribing to receiving their tweets.

After you have followed someone their tweets will appear in your timeline. For your tweets to appear in someone else's timeline the user must be following you.

@ Mentions
@ mentions are how you publicly interact with people. To make use of them all you need to do is type the @ symbol then the username of the person you want to mention. For example If I wanted to mention or reply to Chris Rock I would type @chrisrock. You could also click the "Mention user" button on the users profile or click the "reply" link on a tweet.

Like normal tweets @ mentions will appear in your timeline, however you can view them all by click the "Mentions" tab on your homepage.

Direct Messages
Direct messages or just "messages" are private, they can only be seen by you and the person you have sent one to.
This feature receives a lot of abuse and because of this not many people pay much attention to direct messages, however they can still be handy from time to time.

To send a user a Message just navigate to their profile and click the "Message" button. To view the messages you have received just click the "Messages" link on your homepage.

ReTweets
Retweets or RT's as they are more commonly know as are a way to share tweets you like with your followers. Retweets will appear in your timeline like any other tweet, however you can view only Retweeted tweets by clicking the "Retweets" link on your homepage.

There are two different ways to retweet a tweet you think is worthy. The easiest way is to simply click the "Retweet" button found on the tweet itself. The other way to do it is to copy the tweet and create an @ mention with letters RT in front of it then paste in the tweet. Doing it this way is know as the old way and will appear in the users Mentions tab instead of the Retweets tab.

Favorites
Twitter gives you the ability to save tweets to a Favorites list. By adding a tweet to your favorites list you are able to quickly find it again.
Add a tweet to your favorites by mousing over it and clicking "Favorite". Once you have a tweet in your favorites list, the list will appear on the sidebar of the home page.

Lists
Twitter lists are a way of organizing people you follow into groups so you can easily view their tweets.
Lists can either be marked public or private. If you create a public list other users can follow the list and see everyone thats on it.

You can create a new list or manage the lists you have created by clicking the "Lists" button on your homepage. To add people to a list, navigate to their profile and click the button that looks like a bullet list, a drop down menu will appear and you can select the list or lists that you would like to add the user to.

If someone has added you to a public list that you do not wish to be on, you can remove yourself by blocking the creator of the list.

What it is and how it's done

Twitter Account PhishingAccount Phishing has always been a concern for the users of social networks and the users of Twitter are no exception to this. Twitter does a pretty damn good job at protecting users from phishing attacks, however from time to time they do happen.

Authorized Applications
When you use a 3rd party service that requires access to your Twitter account it will ask you to authorize it. Malicious applications will take advantage of this access and use it to spam your followers or collect your data.

Never authorize any application unless you trust it's creator and know exactly what it's going to do.

What To Do If Your Account Is Compromised
If you believe your account has been compromise then the best thing you can do is change your password as quick as possible and revoke access to your account from any possible rouge applications.

Setting Up Your Twitter Profile

Your Twitter profile says a lot about you and is often all some people will see. It's vital you take the time to fill out your profile information and set your profiles background, if you don't you may very well be wasting your time on Twitter altogether as people will just overlook your account without reading your tweets or following you.

Profile Picture
A good choice for a profile picture is a recent photo of yourself, however you can really use anything you like. The image you choose to use should be "safe for work".

Name
You should use your real name here. It will help people find you when they are searching for you and it will also give you more credibility. If you don't want to use your real name, then don't make up a fake name. Fake names are easy to spot and will destroy your hopes of people reading your tweets.

Location
You don't have to and shouldn't use your home address here. Use a city/state name followed by a country/state name as your location.
Setting your location is important as many 3rd party services make use of this information, providing it can help have your tweets heard by a local audience.

Web
An ideal URL for this section is a URL that points to a website that lets users know a little more about you. You shouldn't use some ugly affiliate URL here. If you don't have a personal Blog you can link to then you can create an about me page at about.me and link to it.

Bio
Twitter gives you 160 characters for your bio and it's best if you make use of each and every single one of them. Twitter also allows you to use hash tags in your bio. Using hash tags in your bio can help people find you when they are looking for people that are interested in certain topics.

Profile Design
When you choose a design you should choose a design that best reflects what you are interested in.

Just like your picture you can use pretty much whatever you want as your Twitter background as long as it is safe for work.

Tweeting The Right Way

Because the left way is wrong.

Before you worry about gaining twitter followers or tweeting sponsored tweets it's important you understand how to use twitter correctly. Many people use twitter incorrectly, they get barely any clicks and people often abuse them, clearly this is not what you want when you are tying to use twitter to make money.

Constructing A Tweet
For a tweet to be effective it needs to be well constructed, poorly constructed tweets are often skipped over and never re-tweeted or shared.
For a tweet to be well constructed it needs to include a hash tag, a link in the middle of the tweet(optional), be spelt correctly and ooze your personalty.

Example tweet 1: "#Wikileaks double dares Pentagon hawks - http://digg.com/d31ZnXy?t - Assange said his whistle-blower site won't be silenced by the Pentagon"

Example tweet 2: "Unit for rent in #Mooloolaba - http://bit.ly/aeKWfa - 2 bdrm, 1 bath room and single lock up garage with Great views + on canal $265 a week"

Example tweet 3: "If I pay for shipping via registered post and you ship the item via standard post the first thing I will do is leave you bad feedback #eBay"

Shrinking Links
Whenever you post a link you should use a service such as bit.ly or is.gd to shorten it. I personally prefer to use bit.ly as you are able to monitor how your link is preforming around the web.

You should avoid services that offer to pay you for using their url shortening service. Your Twitter followers will not be happy when they click these links as they will be presented with ad's before they are able to see the content you have shared.

Tweet Frequently
Tweeting once a day is not enough, once an hour is more in the ball park. The more often you tweet the more chance you have of being seen. There is such a thing as to much though, always try to leave at least a few minuets between your tweets.

Twitter Account Automation

It's not all it's cut out to be...

Twitter account automation isn't all it's cut out to be, there is no doubt that it can save you a little time however it can have some very adverse reactions the main one being it can destroy your standing in the community.

Automatic Tweets
The most common form of account automation is automated tweets and if not abused automated tweets can save you a lot of time. You shouldn't automatically post conversation starters or quotes. News and blog posts usually work ok as automated tweets.

Auto Follow
I believe Twitter has either stopped or is currently trying to stop 3rd party services from giving you the ability to auto follow users. Auto follow is a horrible idea, even if you come across a service that claims to offer it don't give in to temptation. No matter how "smart" the auto follow system claims to be you will end up having to spend a lot of time cleaning up your twitter account.

Automatic Direct Messages
A lot of people use automatic direct messages in an effort to gain traffic to their websites or referrals for their affiliate programs. Most people hate these messages they are very impersonal and all to often do not apply to the reader. If you use automatic direct messages you could be doing more harm then good and in my opinion should stop right now and never consider using them again.

Who To Follow

An important part of gaining Twitter followers is knowing who to follow

Gaining Twitter followers is no doubt an important part of tweeting for profit, however it's certainly possible to profit from a small amount of followers.
To make money with Twitter your followers need to be targeted, active and engaged. A big part of accomplishing this is knowing who to follow.

Finding New Followers
If you want people to follow you on Twitter then you need to start following them. The easiest way to discover new people to follow is by using twitters search function.
You should search for keywords that are related to what you tweet about. If you follow people that are not interested in the same things as you then they will most likely never follow you back and if they do they won't find your content interesting.

5 Minuets Ago
Try to follow people that have tweeted recently. Doing so will greatly increase your chances of being followed back. This is also clearly a good way of discovering active accounts.

Don't Mass Follow
Don't follow tons of people at once, a trickle feed of new twitter followers is the best method. This way you are easily able to manage who hasn't followed you back yet and ensure you don't follow automated accounts.

No Profile, No follow
Avoid following people without any profile information or a profile picture. These are normally automated accounts and will more then likely just unfollow you once you have followed back. Also accounts like these are often banned quickly by Twitter, following them back can leave you following an account you cannot unfollow.

Get Off The Train
"Follower trains" and follow back groups are not good neighbourhoods, sure you will get some new Twitter followers maybe even thousands of them. The followers are not interested in following you, they want you to follow them. Most of these users will clutter your timeline and unfollow you at some strategic point.

Don't Buy Twitter Followers
Yes people do actually buy Twitter followers, however it's something I recommended people never do. The potential for being scammed is way to high, you could quite easily end up paying for 10,000 bots to follow you even when it's guaranteed that you won't.

Churning
Churning is one of the most annoying things people do on twitter. Churning is when someone follows you and unfollows you on a regular basis in order to stay at the top of your followers list.
Your account will most likely be banned for doing this these days, however you should be aware that this is a common practice and you should make an effort not to do it!

High Followers to Following Ratio

Every now and again you will come across a user that has a staggering amount of followers and is not following many people at all. At first you might think, WOW! this person must post some awesome tweets, however upon further inspection you notice the person is just like you. They tweet the same sort of things you do and do it as often as you do, why don't you have the amount of followers they have? It's because they cheat, they are what I like to call "Serial Churners".

99% of the time people with high a followers to following ratio use a 3rd party service to automate the friend finding process. Serial churners will follow around 50 people a day (max allowed by Twitter) then unfollow everyone a day or two later. This method only "works" because many people don't keep their Twitter account maintained.

Twiends - Twiends.com can help you gain large amounts of Twitter followers pretty damn quickly. Twiends helps you gain more Twitter followers by offering incentives to users for following you. The incentives are called seeds and with lots of them you can gain lots of followers. Seeds can be accumulated by following people or by logging in each day. Twiends did have a referral program, however they have decided to close it.

Engaging with your Twitter followers is a very important step that 99% of people that want to make money with Twitter don't even consider. Engaging with your twitter followers has so much weight that you could safely call it the "magic bullet" for making money with Twitter.

Saying Hello
Saying a quick hello to new followers goes a really long way. Once you have made the initial connection with someone they are far more likely to keep an eye out for your tweets. Clearly you cannot interact with each and every single one of your new Twitter followers but you should damn well try your best to.

You should not say hello via a direct message, it should only be done via an @ reply. You run the risk of people thinking your message is automated if you send a direct message.

Respond To Questions
If you see someone ask a question you should do your best to answer it. If their asking a question you don't know the answer to then do some research, it's a great excuse to learn something new.

Re-Tweets
Re-tweeting tweets you like is powerful, people you re-tweet are not only more likely to re-tweet your tweets later on but they will keep an eye out for your tweets in their timeline.

You should never ever re-tweet anything containing a link without visiting the link first, no matter how much you trust the people you follow. I've seen many people re-tweet questionable content purely because they did not visit the link first.

@ Spam
@ Spam is common on Twitter and surprisingly easy to do by accident. It occurs when someone sends you and a few other people the same @ mention. Normally @ Spam looks a little like this:

"Hey have you seen this? - http://example.com @user1 @user2 @user3 @user4"

@ Spam is a practice you need to steer clear of. Mass engaging like this isn't effective and will more then likely result in your account being banned.

Twitter Account Maintenance

What you need to do to keep your account in good standing

Keeping your Twitter account in good standing is important. Many 3rd party services that "score" your social efforts will mark you down and users will be less likely to follow you back if your Twitter account is not maintained.

Unfollow Those That Are Not Following You
Use a service like friendorfollow to discover who isn't following you in return. Once you have discoverd who isn't following you, you should manually unfollow these people.
Never use any mass unfollow tools, twitter may ban your account if you do.

Unfollow Suspected Bots And Automated Accounts
Keep a close eye on your timeline and unfollow any account you think is automated. Automated accounts will not only clog your timeline, they will never click your links or interact with you in any way.

Unfollow NSFW Accounts
Unfollow accounts that share content that is not safe for work. Following these accounts may damage your accounts reputation with search engines.

Setting Your Price
All to often I see people that have priced themselves out of the game. If you want to charge more then a couple of dollars per tweet then you really must be able to motivate people to buy. Using The Correct Tags
Being discovered by sponsors isn't to difficult as long as you start off on the right foot and set your tags correctly. Now that you know how to construct a tweet, follow the right people, get sponsored and keep your account maintained you need some strategies to help you bring in the money. These are the exact strategies I use to make money everyday on twitter, they are tried and tested.

Advertising To Tweets Ratio
Twitter displays 20 tweets at a time on your public profile and because of this you should try your best to keep your ratio around 10:1. You never want more then 2 advertisements on your profile at a time.

Going over board and posting a lot of advertisements will have extremely negative results. If you go over board you will be abused, unfollowed and blocked by a large portion of your followers(unless they are all bots).

My Daily Routine
My daily routine is designed to keep growth slow and steady.

1. Follow people that have followed you and unfollow anyone that hasn't reciprocated your follow.
2. Make your first tweet of the day, this should NOT be advertising related.
3. Follow 5-10 people.
4. Engage with your followers for a while. Re-tweet at least 1 tweet.
5. Tweet an advertisement.
6. Wait 10-15mins after tweeting your advertisement then engage with your followers for a while again or share an interesting piece of media.
7. Follow another 5-10 people.
8. Tweet something your followers would find interesting.

Once A Month
This strategy is designed to give a boost to your followers count without your account becoming messy and hard to maintain.

1. Unfollow everyone that isn't following you back.
2. Follow 15-20 people that have been active in the last 5 minuets.
3. Tweet something your followers will find interesting.
4. Follow another 15-20 people that have been active in the last 5 minuets.
5. Follow everyone that follows you back this will help your followers grow faster and you can clean out the dodgy accounts later.

    It's well worth having a solid go at. There's a lot of benefits to it, I've found it to be a great source of traffic.
