If you're wondering how to get perfect pitch, here's 3 exercises you can do to set you on your way now!
#1 - How to get perfect pitch by listening to yourself
Wanna know how to get perfect pitch? Remember when tape recorders were all the rage? Well, if you can acquire one, you can put it to good use. Most homes have one lying around somewhere! (Even an old betacam will work!)Put a blank tape in and push "record".
Now get some sort of musical instrument: piano, guitar, harpsichord, etc...and play a note, any note. Play the note again, but this time try to match the note with your voice. Do it again with the same note. Repeat several times.
Now move to another note and try to match that one. Repeat several times. Move to another one, and another one, and so on...
Go on in this way for several minutes.
Stop the tape, hit rewind and listen to yourself.
Do this for a couple of weeks and you'll start to hear the difference when you've matched the note (when you're on-key [pitch]) or when you haven't matched the note (when you're off-key [pitch]).
This is an excellent way to start, especially for folks who've had no musical training.
#2 - How to get perfect pitch by association
Think tests you took in high school or college. Maybe you learned all that information by using what's called "association".
Association is when you link (associate) something you don't know with something you do know in order to remember it.
Eventually you'll be able to name any note you hear!

- So go back to you're piano or other musical instrument and play a note (again, this can be any note).
- Close your eyes and play the note again.
- Now, ask yourself what that note makes you think of. Maybe its a color, place, another song, anything. When you come up with something (we'll call this your association), play the note again and think of your "association". Repeat this several times.
- Now, when you feel pretty secure in your association with that specific note, keep your eyes closed and play different notes randomly one at a time. Eventually you'll happen to hit your "associated" note.
- Do you recognize it? When you think you've heard your associated note, open your eyes and see if you're right.
- If not, go back and play your associated note. Close your eyes again and picture your association.
- Now, again keeping your eyes closed, play different notes just at random. See if you can tell when you happen to play your associated note. Open your eyes and see if you're right.
- Do this exercise everyday for one week and you'll find yourself getting better at recognizing that note and, before you know it, you'll be able to name it without looking!
- When you've begun to recognize that note, move to the next note up from your original note and start the association process over again. Do this for every note in the chromatic scale until you have an association with each one.
Eventually you'll be able to name any note you hear!

#3 - How to get perfect pitch - use other pitches!

We all have our favorite songs. You know, the ones that draw on your emotions making you blissfully happy or quietly contemplative. You probably know the words by heart and can probably sing the first note of that song with no trouble.
Use this knowledge to your advantage!
Play the first part of your song then get out your trusty musical instrument and find the first note of you song on your instrument. This may take a few minutes, but, I promise you, it's there!
Look to see what that note is. Is it a C? An A? Doesn't matter if it's a F#! Identify that note and remember it.
Now sing that note. Do this a couple of times.
After an hour, go back and , without listening to it, think of your song. See if you can sing the note first and then see if it matches the note that corresponds to the first note of your song.
Do they match?
If not, Play the first part of your song again and they play the note on your instrument that corresponds with it again.
Go back later and try to sing the note again, then check the note on your instrument.
Do this for a week. (This is a fun way to improve your pitch.)
