How to Get Rid of Cat Urine Odor Secrets

Hey everyone, my name is Tony and this is my lens on how to get rid of cat urine smell. I have a tabby name Boo-Boo who was a huge trouble maker when she was a kitten. Since then, I've learned a lot about cat behavior problems, including urination problems.

In this lens, we'll cover why your cat is urinating all over your house, instead of the litter box and look at some ways to get rid of the cat urine odor once and for all.

You Can Probably Relate To My Cat Urination Story...

Before researching how to get rid of cat urine smell, I was completely stumped as to why Boo Boo was eliminating inside of the house instead of her litter box.

The cat was peeing on my bed, and all over my furniture. I would leave the house and when I came back, I found parts of the house completely soiled. It was gross. And I could not, for the life of me, figure out why my once precious and dear cat was doing this.

I felt embarrassed whenever I invited friends over because the smell of cat urine at my place was so strong. I became really angry at my cat and tried disciplining her, but nothing seemed to work. She didn't seem to understand what she was doing wrong.

She I spent hours scrubbing out her mess, but she continued to urinate in the house, instead of her litter box. You probably already know how difficult it is to get rid of the urine smell, no matter how much you clean.

I was ready to give up.

I was ready to give her away to a shelter. There was no way I could continue living in such a disgusting place full of cat urine (and sometimes poop!)

I researched hard and eventually found out why my cat was doing this and how to stop her from peeing outside the litter box (more on that later). I also figured out an excellent way to get rid of the cat urine smell from my home.

Why Your Cat is Peeing In Your House

Before learning how to get rid of cat urine smell, it's absolutely important to figure out why your cat is urinating outside of the litter box and find a solution. This is because if you don't take action to prevent your cat from peeing outside of his litter box in the first place, he will continue to pee in the house over and over again, which is beyond frustrating.

First and foremost, you need to figure out if your cat has a medical condition, such as Urinary Tract Disease. It's absolutely critical that you seek medical attention for your cat if this is the case. There are certain signs to look for that indicate your cat needs a trip to her ver.

In many cases, however, cats peeing inside the house is a behavioral issue.

I came to realize that even the smallest household changes can upset my cat, which causes her to protest with her urine. There's a certain way to integrate new family members (including other pets) to the household, otherwise your cat may be stressed out and pee all over the house. The most important thing is to have good litter box practices.

There are certain litter box practices you MUST follow when setting up your cat's litter box. Most owners neglect these rules, which is a big reason why cats do not want to pee in them.

It's also important to figure out whether your cat is actually urinating or spraying.

How to Get Rid of Cat Urine Smell

With cat odor cleaner products

To get rid of the cat urine odor in your home, you need to clean the urine spots in a specific way.

First you need a cat urine cleaner.

There are a ton of cat urine cleaners for sale. Most of these contain enzymes and bacteria that react with the urine and get rid of the odor while making the stain easier to clean. These can be found at all pet stores, grocery stores or online.

One that I (and many other cat owners) recommend is Nature's Miracle Odor Remover. This heavy duty urine odor remover is available here through Amazon.com and is pretty much guaranteed to remove all odors and stains - even when most other urine and stain removers fail.

Making Your Own Cat Urine Cleaner

The other alternative is to make your own cat urine cleaner. There are numerous home-made cat urine cleaners, but most cat owners agree that this is the best recipe (credit ehow.com)

Mix hot water, peroxide and baking soda and stir the mixture until it's thick. Then, take a scrubbing brush and apply the paste onto the cat urine stain. It will dry quickly. You can use a vacuum to clean the flakes. This formula works great for masking the disgusting cat urine smell.

Note that the home-made solution is not as strong as Nature's Miracle. after a few weeks, the odor will return, though not as strong as before.

Cleaning Tips

Tips on how to get rid of cat urine smell

Here are some guidelines when cleaning your carpet and furniture of cat urine.

- As soon as you find a new spot your cat just peed on, dry it up as soon as possible with a dry cloth or paper towel
- Do not rub the urine spot. Instead, blot it so the urine doesn't spread all over the carpet.
- Never use an Ammonia based cleaner. This causes cats to come back and pee on the same spot. Be sure to check out the big link above for the best guide on how to stop cats from peeing outside of their litter box.
- Do your best to keep your cat from the area you just cleaned until the odor is completely gone.
- Use foil to cover up the spot if your cat continually pees on the same spot inside of your house

Pet urine consists of mainly three parts. Urea; makes the urine sticky and allows the other two parts to stick around. Urochrome gives the urine its ugly yellow color that stains carpets, furniture, the wall and anything the cat sprays or urinates on. The third main part of the urine is Uric Acid. Uric acid in the urine consists of salts and crystals that give off the extremely pungent odor. These odors attach to minute solids floating in the air, most are invisible the heaver ones you can see floating in the air when the sunlight comes through the window in just the right angle. Each particle has a positive electrical charge because it is missing an electron. This enables it to drift as it is drawn in one direction and then another by electrical charges imbedding in carpets, drapes and walls. An ozone generator will remove the odors by seeking out the source and destroying it, aerosol sprays and candles only replace the odor with a more pleasant odor they do not remove the odor only mask it.
