It's true. From your children (who will one day leave home with the skills they have, or haven't learnt from you), to your spouse, friends, family, in fact any visitors to your home at all.
Do you find yourself judging someone else's housekeeping skills? Do you forget your own home and when in another pack-rats home and wonder why they don't get rid of the clutter? Just remember next time they are at your home, that they are also doing the same thing. We all do it, it's human nature, we just don't always apply the same judgement to our own homes.

You Do Not Have To Get Rid of Your Clutter By Selling It
Otherwise known as the yard sale that never comes..
Get this notion out of your head immediately. Of course you CAN have a yard sale if you wish, or even sell your clutter on ebay...but here's the clincher; don't you need to be fairly organized to do that? If you were organized in the first place, you wouldn't be looking for tips on how to get rid of clutter!
Let me tell you from experience that having your own yard sale is not always a lot of fun. The dealers arrive extra-early, ignoring your ad that clearly stated the hours of your yard sale, not to mention a whole other host of what adds up to be a rather irritating day, all because you are trying to make some money back on your junk. Build a bridge and just get over it! Let it go!

1. How To Get Rid Of Clutter - NO YARD SALES
GET RID OF THE CLUTTER YOU HAVE BEEN STORING FOR A YARD SALE. NOW.

When I finally got my head around this concept, and realized it would cut my clutter clearing caper by over 50%, I couldn't believe what I managed to get rid of. About 10 plastic garbage bags full of clothes, 3 boxes of books, and several small items of furniture. A friend was the happy recipient of the small furniture (mirror, coffee table, bed frame), and the thrift stores received the rest.

2. How To Get Rid of Clutter - CULL THE CLUTTER BREEDING SPOTS
Display your goodies instead (to scare off the clutter monster)
In your home, your items should be either displayed properly or put away properly. Does anyone realize you have beautiful items, or are they hidden in cupboards because the clutter has claimed their space?
Go and get a box (or laundry basket). Put anything that does not belong on display and/or in that particular room, and wipe down the surface. You can deal with the contents of the box later. Right now you are on a furniture finding mission, as it's hidden under all your clutter.
Put your decorative items on display, and eliminate the gap, or the clutter demons will find that spot again. You really can get rid of your clutter hot spots by doing this.

3. How to Get Rid of Clutter - RUTHLESS CONSISTENCY
When something comes IN, something must go OUT
I know that's a strange title, but I think it's very apt. Here's how I do it. Junk mail goes straight into the recycling bin. Magazines lying around that have been read, out they go. I rip out the pages I want to keep, and get rid of them before I create a fire hazard. Yes, I suppose I could recycle them to the doctors waiting room, but until that day comes (and I actually bother doing it), out they go. It takes me less effort to just get rid of them. I know how lazy I am!
Same deal for clothing or bric-a-brac. Just bought a pair of shoes? Donate an old pair at the same time. When gifts are given to the family, encourage them to let go of an item or three at the same time. Pop them down to the local thrift store, and this way, everybody wins.
