How To Get Rid Of Head Lice

Are you plagued with head lice in your family? Did you think they had gone for good? Here are a few tips I have learned from experience that may help you get rid of head lice. First of all do not be too alarmed if you have found head lice in your hair or another member of your family. These horrible creatures are far more common than you would imagine but there ARE solutions to this problem.

First thing is to establish which family members have the head lice by inspecting each in turn. Most will mainly be found at the temples, back of neck and top or crown of head. If children are infected keep them away from school until the problem is treated. This will prevent them being spread to other families via hair contact at school.

Obviously the first thing to buy will be a head lice comb. There are some very cheap and effective ones available at chemists and electronic nit combs can also be bought. Either will work effectively if used properly, it is just down to personal choice. I use the basic plastic comb with metal teeth rather than spend a lot of money on electric versions and find that it works fine on my children.

Secondly you must find some form of treatment or remedy to eradicate the problem and get rid of head lice for good. There are many types of lotions to choose from, some a lot more expensive than others. As yet I have only found one in particular that works effectively, it seems that after a certain amount of time the head lice become immune to certain treatments so I have found that using different lotions in rotation often works better.

My Simple Treatment

Tips and Advice

My two daughters were, for a while, plagued with head lice and no matter how often I treat the problem they simply returned a month later after contact with an affected child in school. It seemed an endless task, applying lotion, letting it dry overnight sometimes, and combing the lice out. Since then I have checked my girls' hair every month and for the last two years have found no more lice.

Here is what we do in our house to prevent them coming back, it is a bit time consuming but worth the effort: Once you have used a lotion and followed the instructions to get rid of any lice, go out and buy a large bottle of conditioner, any brand will do. Wash your child's hair and towel dry. Apply conditioner to damp hair but do not rinse out immediately. Instead, using your head lice comb, section the hair and comb the conditioner through thoroughly. This will break any eggs that may be attached and will also coat each hair strand with conditioner making the hair slippery and preventing lice form attaching themselves. Once you have combed the hair thoroughly, rinse the conditioner out and leave to dry.

This may seem like a simple treatment but it is effective. I took this advice from a friend, and did this once per week for four weeks with great success. Now we do it once per month, simply for prevention purposes, and have not found any lice or eggs.

I hope this advice is of some help to you. I can sympathise with those who are struggling with this problem so I hope that this will work as effectively for you as it has for me.
