Is it Possible to Get Rid of that Skunk Smell?

My adorable Cocker Spaniel, Chip, is one of those dogs that never learns his lesson. Home Remedies for Skunk Spray on Dog

Tomato Juice for Skunk Smell

I Give it a Thumbs Down

tomato juice for skunk smell

This is the oldest trick in the book. I tried it and it DID NOT work. Reviews on the net are mixed about this method of how to get ride of skunk smell on dog but I give it a thumbs down. If you want to try it here's what we recommend:
1. Tomato Juice and/or Tomato Paste
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
3. Mix into a paste
4. Thoroughly coat dog's fur
5. Allow to soak for at least 15 minutes
6. Rinse thoroughly
7. Shampoo with oatmeal dog shampoo

Peroxide and Baking Soda

I give it a 50/50 rating

peroxide and baking soda for skunk spray

This was the second bath we gave our Chip and I must say it did help somewhat. It didn't, however, take the smell away completely. Here's the Peroxide and Baking Soda recipe for removing skunk smell from dog:
1. (1) Quart of 4% hydrogen peroxide
2. 1/4 cup of baking soda
3. 1 teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid
4. Thoroughly coat dog's fur
5. Allow to soak for NO LONGER THAN 5 MINUTES
6. Rinse thoroughly
7. Shampoo with oatmeal dog shampoo

**NOTE** Once you have mixed up these ingredients, use them immediately. The chemical reaction they produce doesn't last very long after they are combined.

**WARNING**This mixture may bleach your dog's fur!

Did You Know....

That skunk spray is actually an oil and that's why it is recommended that you wash your dog with a de-greaser soap?

Orange Bath For Removing Skunk Smell From Dog

orange bath for skunk spray

I did not try this remedy to remove skunk smell from dog but I saw it several times in my research:

1. Blend 5 to 10 oranges in a blender (depending on the size of your dog)
2. Mix the oranges with Dawn dishwashing liquid (or another grease cutting solution)
3. Thoroughly coat dog's fur
4. Allow to soak for at least 10 minutes
5. Rinse thoroughly
6. Shampoo with oatmeal dog shampoo

Coke Cola For Getting Rid of Skunk Smell on Dog

Not Pepsi, Mountain Dew or any other drink, but giving your dog a bath in Coke Cola is supposed to remove the skunk smell. I'm a Pepsi girl so I didn't try this either!

Ewwww...there's nothing like the smell of dog mixed with the heavy odor of skunk. Yuck! Growing up in NY we had a couple of dogs who had run ins with skunks and needed to be de-skunked. This list of remedies would have come in very handy! (Fortunately, doesn't happen as often here in the desert!)

My daughter had this same problem...she used the peroxide solution which worked just fine. But she has a white dog, so the discoloration of the coat was no problem. Good remedies, thanks for sharing.

I've had other people tell me that the peroxide bath works well for them. I'm wondering if it depends on the breed of dog and the texture of their fur? I have two cocker spaniels, an English and an American and their fur is completely different. Hum...more research is required!!
