Your Journey to Toned Abs and the Road Blocks You'll Encounter
OK, like I said above; getting six pack abs no matter who you are is about two main things: building muscle and burning fat.
Alright let's talk about some of the ways to do this. First you'll need to put together an exercise routine for yourself so that you can begin building up your ab muscles.
I must warn you from the start; a lot of the exercises you thought were helping are really just dragging your progress out at a snails pace... Such exercises include: crunches, sit-ups, ab machines in general; and even cardio exercises like tread mills and elliptical machines.
Now don't get me wrong, if you do something long enough, sure it will show some results... But just think about this question in your mind, "Would you rather try to put out a fire with a garden hose or a fire hose?" The garden hose may work eventually, but we all know what would get the job done faster.
OK, let's dive into the different types of exercises you can do and not only talk about what you should avoid but also why you should avoid it.
Crunches
Focusing all of your time on crunches and/or situps is a very ineffective way of getting abs. Isolating a small muscle group like your ab muscles does very little when it comes to getting any type of reaction from your body... And what I'm going to show you here is that getting the right reaction from your body is the fastest way to get six pack abs.
It's not about isolating small muscle group like your abs; if you concentrate on larger muscle groups and full body workouts, your body will react much differently and cause you to burn more fat... The more fat you burn the more visible your abs will be.
Running Mindlessly on Treadmills
You may have done this before to try and burn fat and I'm here to tell you that it's ineffective! Exercise and workouts in general should be all about body and mind. Your body needs to react to the things your body is doing along with the surroundings.
If you're jogging or walking on a treadmill or elliptical machine there is a disconnect between your mind and the rest of your body and nothing is really happening.
People often confuse cardio for simply running around or doing something like that... Cardio is anything that gets you breathing heavy and working your heart, it's that simple.

OK, now let's talk about some effective ab workouts...
Some of these exercises may seem a bit strange because they don't look like they're working your abs but they actually are, and they're doing a much better job at it than crunches ever could.
Renegade Dumbbell Rows
To do this exercise you start out in a pushup position with both of your hands on a pair of dumbbells. Then you pick one arm up while keeping yourself steady with the other arm. After that you simply bring the dumbbell back to the ground and switch to the other arm... Continue doing it and you'll start to feel the burn, especially in your abs.
Here's an example:

Mountain Climbers
This exercise is done by also starting in the pushup position and then shuffling your feet in and out so that your knees are moving up towards your chest. If you look at the example below you can see that it kind of resembles climbing a mountain just you're on the ground. This works with your whole body and gives you much better results then average ab workouts.

As you can see there's more than one way to get six pack abs... The exercises I just showed you are much more effective at getting you toned abs then crunches or situps.
So I gave you a couple exercises to work on, the next thing you need to focus on is your diet.

You can get six pack abs even faster with the right diet.
Now let's talk about the right diet and nutrition you should be focusing on in order to get those solid abs you're aiming for.
The nutrition aspect in my opinion is fairly simple... Especially if you're not extremely overweight. The main things you should stay away from are artificial sugars and too much sodium.
Don't worry about natural fats, they get a bad rap because of the name; try to keep your saturated fat intake low, and avoid trans fats at all cost.
When I say natural fats and sugars I don't mean a burger and a soda from the fast food joint down the street. I'm talking about fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed meats. Stick with as much natural food as you can, lower your sodium intake and you'll be doing really well.
Stick with natural unprocessed foods; if you can do that you're already ahead of the majority of people out there. Stay away from hydrogenated oils, fried foods, and high fructose corn syrup... I know they're running those commercials trying to give high fructose corn syrup a better name by comparing it with sugar but no one has ever lost weight and gotten in great shape by dieting with sugar!

What happens when you finally plateau?
While on your way to your goal of having six pack abs, there's going to be a few road blocks... Some of them are going to be self made, meaning you are having trouble committing to a certain thing therefore your progress will suffer.
One major road block that isn't caused by you (at least you're not consciously aware of it)is the plateau effect. This is where your body gets used to all of the exercises you're doing stops progressing; it knows exactly whats coming so it no longer builds up more muscle... You may even gain a few pounds because your body just gets so comfortable with your workouts.
The best way to combat this plateauing effect is by changing up your entire workout routine. You can change the reps, how many sets you do, your rest period, the order of your exercises, etc. Anything you can do to 'confuse' your muscles so that they don't know what's coming next will cause them to develop more to ensure that they are ready for whatever challenge comes next.
So if you're used to doing 3 sets of 10, try doing 10 sets of 3, or do 1 set of a lighter weight for 50 reps; there are countless ways to change up your workout routine and the benefits you get from it are well worth it.
If you want to get six pack abs and ensure that they look as good as possible then you're going to have to be ready and get past the point of plateauing.

Great Ab Workouts that aren't really ab workouts...
As I've said earlier on, a lot of exercises are a good workout for your ab muscles... It doesn't have to be all about crunches and in most situations it's usually better that it isn't crunches.
Alright let's get started; the first exercise I'm going to talk about is rowing. Rowing machines are a great full body workout; rowing not only works your abs, but it also helps your cardio, legs and arms; it's an all around great workout.
Another great exercise is swimming. Swimming is another all-in-one type exercise that's also low impact on your joints. When you swim, make sure you do some sprints; swim as fast as you can for a lap then rest for a short time and then go another lap. If you don't think that swimming is good for your abs then you obviously missed the Olympics and never saw Michael Phelps.
Now lets talk about mountain biking... This is a great exercise that can work for you no matter what your experience level. If you're a beginner then just ride a less resistant path; if you're more experienced then you can ride a steeper path with more bumps and obstacles.
As you can see, a lot of exercises that most people don't attribute to ab workouts are actually great for your abs; remember it's more about burning fat then doing ab specific exercises all of the time; burn fat and you'll be able to see your abs.
