Will Power for Beginners

Ranked #13,975 in Healthy Living, #219,982 overall

How I used WILL POWER to lose 50lbs!

Yup, this is me in the picture. It was taken Halloween 2011. A year before I would never had thought to wear a skin tight outfit like this out in public.
I lost 50 pounds, my self esteem rocketed, and I was EXCITED to show off my new body for Halloween!

Will Power is the number one trait you need to achieve your goals. Many folks use the excuse that they don't have "enough" will power and they give up without even trying.

I'm going to show you the most basic baby steps I took, and how you can do it to!

Before and After

Weight loss before and after pictures

I'm a 40 year old mom in the BEST shape of my life. My life transformation started while going through a traumatic divorce and devastating custody battle that lasted four excruciating years. Many people who have and/or are going through similar situations can not even comprehend how to muster the strength and will power to do what I have done. It is my intention to help support others no matter where they are in the present and offer tips that helped me to conquer depression and change my life 180 degrees.

Will Power Tips & Tricks

How to start with baby steps

Month One: Confidence Building

...Explore 3 or 4 FUN activities for yourself.

...Have no expectations.

...This is an experiment for you to learn what activities are fun and enjoyable.

-For me I bought an adult hula hoop and hoop exercise video. (I started out doing it just 10 minutes a day.)
-On days I did not want to hoop I used an exercise trampoline and hopped up and down while watching my favorite T.V. shows.
-Other days, I simply walked trying to get 10,000 steps in. I really LOVE nature walks.

Tips to keep it FUN:

Start out with the bare minimum amount of time.
For me I did ten minutes a day, then I increased it to ten minutes twice a day.
By the third month I was having FUN working out 30 minutes a day five days a week.

Keep a daily journal/calendar and try to write just one positive thing you do each day. No matter how small it is.
Example:

Even if you don't get in an activity that day, you DID do something positive. It might not be directly related to weight loss. Whatever it is, if it's positive and in your favor write it down. (I did this and I also blogged about it to).

Don't give up if the scale doesn't move or EVEN when the numbers go up instead of down.
It's harder for women, especially the older we get. It takes time to get the pendulum to swing in the other direction. That is why I stress the importance of making it FUN! It took me three months to start seeing results on the scale. But, during that time I was feeling really good about myself and my confidence was gaining momentum.

For one month- Choose a bad habit you want to change and come up with alternative "healthy" options for a month.
Just ONE little lifestyle change can help you to lose an additional ten pounds in a year.
I started with soda. I replaced it with healthy alternatives.

I switched to:
Diet Green Tea
Water
Diet Dr. Pepper
Lite Beer
Diet Root Beer

Remember it takes approximately 21 days to get your subconscious mind to accept a new habit as your REALITY.
(For me three years later, I am 50lbs lighter and a soda drink is now a treat once or twice a month.) If you exchange just one un-healthy habit with a positive one you can expect to lose up to 30 pounds in three years. (Us 40+ somethings know how fast three years can go by!)

Hula Hoop for Weight Loss

Hoop Fitness

In addition to supporting my weight loss goals, I also learned some fun hoop tricks.
I'm including a short music video on this lens that I made during my weight loss journey using the hula hoop.

When I started hula hooping I used a children's hoop. They are HORRIBLE!!! Get an adult weighted one. They seriously make the world of difference and rapidly help to build your self esteem and confidence!

Additional Support Tools

10,000 Steps a day

Having a pedometer is a great support tool. Anything over 10,000 steps a day is WEIGHT LOSS!
I kept track everyday in my journal how many steps I got in. Even on off days I still kept myself accountable.

This is the trampoline I use.
I LOVE it. Three years later, on rainy days I still pull it out for fun while I watch The View.

Will Power Month Two

Research Fitness Videos

The second month I focused on researching the best home fitness videos for me. This link is to a short article about fitness videos that worked for me and what didn't help me.

My suggestion is to focus the entire month on finding the perfect instructor and fitness level for you. Month three you will begin the actual regime, but right now just make month two about finding out what and who will motivate you to keep coming back for more. Find a video or series that you want to do for 30 minutes, three times a week.

I went to my local library and took out 15 different videos. I did not make it about trying to finish each workout. Instead I spent maybe 10 minutes on each video a few times a week. Doing it this way made me feel in charge and there was no pressure or feelings of failure doing it this way. I actually felt empowered even though I was not ready to start full force ahead. By the third month I ordered Billy Blanks Beginning Tae Bo and boy was I fired up and ready to go!
