There are a few steps you can take to make your dog more comfortable with the water and eventually she may just jump in and join the family in the water. A good way to get your dog accustomed to water is by introducing him to small bodies of water first. When you consider the size of a swimming pool and the water it contains, it can be daunting to your pet. Find small bodies of water and walk your dog through it. Reward him if he walks in the water. Encourage some playtime such as a game of fetch in the water to help them overcome any fear of water he may have.Speaking of water play, fetch is a great way to get your dog used to water fun. Choose his favorite toy and play in the water with him. Splash the ball into the water gently so your dog isn't afraid of the water splashing into his face. Make certain you're standing in the water with your dog so he associates the game and the water with you being in it with him.
As mentioned above, use a kiddie wading pool as a way to get your dog comfortable in the water. Depending on the size of your dog you will need to find a swimming pool that fits his size. Keep in mind that for smaller dogs, you will want to keep the water levels low - like below belly level while getting them used to the water.
Consider purchasing a personal floatation device for your pet. Make certain it is a proper fit for his weight and size. This is a good idea for your dog to wear whether it enjoys the water and can swim or not. If your dog gets tired and has a hard time staying afloat, the PFD makes it easy for you to grasp him and lift him to safety. The most important thing to remember when it comes to your dog and the water, remain calm and understand that your dog may never be truly comfortable in the water and will simply enjoy it from deck side.
