Fantasy and Reality
Even if you've never noticed anything like this, don't worry, we all have the capacity to develop intuition and psychic powers, although for most people developing them will be a task that requires much time and patience. However there are lots of fun ways to get started, read on to learn more!
Intuition, Gut Feelings and The Mind/Body split
Have you ever had a 'gut' feeling about something? This is your body's way of telling you something is going to happen. In the West we are usually told to trust our minds and see this as split from our bodies. This is largely due to events that happened in the 18th century - and The Enlightenment. Previously most people in the west believed that all was connected and that the earth was a living, breathing organism, like a mother. As capitalism began to develop, people wanted to use the world's 'natural resources' but this was not compatible with the old worldview that required us not to desecrate the earth. This (and the rise of science) led to a new worldview, perceiving the world as dead and inert matter that could be manipulated. All the world could be reduced down to a series of processes that worked independently of the situation (for instance if you drop a ball you know it will fall). Scholars like Decartes, Francis Bacon and others developed this idea and the idea that the mind and body were split, not interrelated. This led to the devaluing of the body and what we feel from it, and this coincided well with religions like the Christianity of the time, which portrayed man as aiming to transcend the body to get to a higher place and man 'fighting' with his carnal and animal nature.
Since psychic abilities are highly context dependent, this is one reason science is very sceptical of psychic powers. Ironically science has recently begun to discover that context does matter - I could go on about this but its probably easier if you are interested to search for Quantum Mechanics and Chaos Theory to find out more about this! This worldview is different to that of those in many other places in the world, particularly in places like India and China, where the mind and body is not split in such a way, for instance many people who do yoga report that they become much more aware of their movements and posture, and are able to improve posture and relieve aches by paying more attention to the messages sent by their bodies. Furthermore its well known now even in the west that a happy body leads to a happy mind and vice versa, showing just how connected everything is. The old worldview is beginning to change here in the west, obvious by the popularity of 'New Age' and alternative things such as Paganism, Healing etc but still we are all very conditioned by dominant western paradigm.

How to distinguish intuition from your 'rational' side
Not all intuitive feelings can be felt strongly in the body. Sometimes you might have two different ideas about something - like should you bring up a difficult issue with your friend? One part is saying no, the other yes - how can you tell which is which? In these situations I usually think about the question and each response, giving a bit of space for emotions to surface. What I often find is that there is one option that I want to take, and one that I feel I should take. The one I want to take is usually the correct course of action as its your intuition speaking over your rational side. The message may come across differently with you so do experiment.
If you are finding difficultly with this technique, or even if not, a psychic journal is wonderful for helping you to distinguish between the two, and for generally recognising and developing your psychic powers.
Develop your powers with a Psychic Journal
Get yourself a notebook or journal, a beautiful one is great, here is a selection of gorgeous journals. Or if you are short on money why not buy a cheap notebook and decorate it, you could cover it with coloured paper, stick dried flowers on, shells, use glitter, stencils or whatever!
Sometimes messages come to us through dreams, this could be a psychic prediction, or dreaming about your friend or family member when they are in need, or even just messages to you about your state of wellbeing, dreaming about missing planes or feeling like you can move can be about worries that you are not getting things done. You can greatly improve dream recall by writing them down first thing in the morning, and getting enough sleep.
By practicing Clairsentience, keeping a close watch on your feelings and impressions, and listening to your body you can learn to improve your psychic intuition and grow in confidence. Through keeping a psychic journal you will learn to recognise what is and isn't your intuition, and when you are at your most intuitive, and soon your psychic powers will be sharper than ever!
How to become more intune with your body
Many things can block your psychic awareness including tension, stress, anxiety, tiredness, over excitement and physical pain. One of the most important things to realise is that if your mind is cluttered up with thoughts, repressed emotions or whatever, you are going to find it difficult to receive psychic messages. Therefore, meditation is one of the most important tools on your psychic development journey. It is a way for you to achieve an expanded reality and enriched spiritual growth, by allowing you to transcend the body/mind split and feel at one with the universe. Experiment with different types of meditation to find the best way for you. The longer you practice it the greater the effects, but it shouldn't take long before you feel joy and wellbeing each time you meditate.
This exercise draws from meditation techniques like mindfulness helps you to get intune with your body and also to clear your mind, particularly when done often.
What did you notice? Maybe some aches and pains? Maybe a feeling of wellbeing, particularly after the deep breath. Deep breathing is one of the most powerful relaxation techniques you can use, so use it often, whenever you think of it. If you are feeling anxious or sad about something you might have noticed an uncomfortable feeling around the centre of your chest (the heart chakra). As anyone whose been 'broken hearted' will know, the feeling is really a tangible one in the centre of your chest. Anxiety can also manifest just under the chest, leading to a knotted up stomach feeling.
These (and any other bodily feelings) are both good things to become aware of, because it is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong and simply by deep breathing we can often relieve them. Having a balanced mind and body is essential for allowing space for other messages to get through. However anxiety and broken heartedness they aren't psychic gut feelings, as this is lower down in your body, not surprisingly, near the gut (although for me at least its actually just above my gut. I found this out through wondering if I was having gut feelings but then realising it was due to me having a tummy bug, and in this way, by being aware, I was able to understand the difference, and the more attention you pay to your intuition and to your body the better you'll become at this.
Many Types Of Meditation
Meditation is vital for developing Psychic powers - but contrary to popular belief, meditation doesn't have to only be about lying or sitting quietly - it can be about living mindfully in the world, or getting used to your energy body! Read on to find out more.
Active Meditations & Feeling Your Emotions
Mindfulness and Living in the Present
Mindfulness is all about living in the present - the first mindfulness exercise I linked to is all about enjoying your food in a way that we don't normally tend to, noticing all the little things we ignore due to our hectic lives. But it also stands as a metaphor for mindfulness in general - its all about taking the time to really experience what we do, whilst neither wallowing in the past or worrying about the future. Obviously even experienced mindfulness teachers cannot always be like that but you can extend your time living in the present, and it's very rewarding!
Why not try walking mindfully? Notice each movement in your body as you lift and lower your legs. Do your hands or arms move? Can you feel wind, rain or any other sensation on your skin. What does the pavement or grass feel like beneath your feet?
This exercise is more about recognising where you feel emotions - it will help you improve your understanding of your intuition and when you are having a psychic feeling, and when you are not. It can also help change negative thinking patterns and beat depression by helping you to realise what incidents change and affect your mood.
Keep a feelings diary for a week. Every time you have an encounter that provokes an emotion, note it down. For instance, you smile at a stranger in the street and they smile at you back, the chances are you will actually feel a rush of pleasure in your body. So think about where the sensation is in your body, what does it feel like? Write everything down you can think of.
Similarly if you have a negative experience eg someone is rude to you in a shop, notice again how this makes you feel, and where in your body you feel it.
I really do recommend this exercise, I was amazed when I tried it, to realise that all these emotions were so squarely located in my body when previously I had conceived of them as mainly in the mind.
Drumming, Dancing and other meditations
I've already suggested walking mindfully. You can also take a stroll somewhere beautiful, maybe in a local park or woodland if you are a lucky person who lives near one!
Drumming is a great way to clear the mind (or as I said to put it another way focus the mind on one thing. The rhythmic sound and actions can be excellent to get you into a trance state, particularly when done with others. Drumming circles and classes exist that cater for all levels of skill including total beginners, and people tend to report an amazing sense of connection with the group, and entering a state of trance, even on their first try of the drums.
Dancing can also be another good way to focus whilst using your body. Dancing to drums is particularly rewarding, especially if the drumming is in front of you, but even a recording can be great. You can also meditate whilst lying or sitting to drums. It's a great way to relieve stress and tension, which is very important in increasing your receptivity to psychic messages and premonitions.
Active Meditations Continued
I recently tried Qi Gong (aka Chi Gung) and really enjoyed it because it is an active and fun way to meditate and also to manipulate energy and experience the energy body. (Qi and Chi mean energy). Tai Chi is very similar but requires a bit less movement. Both are great for your health and posture. There's a really great course you can buy online which I recommend - you can get a 2 week trial to see if it is for you. Learn Qi Gong from a great teacher.
Energy Body & Astral Travel
Particularly for tarot cards, but really for all kinds of psychic work, being intune with the energy that flows through your body is very important. From years of reading the cards I now can get a tingle in my hands just by thinking about it. By being able to direct and open up the energy points in your hands it helps you to pick the right cards from the deck. Had I known then about ways to stimulate your energy body, this could have developed in me years ago. Being aware of your energy body can drastically improve your healing ability and the chances of being able to Astral Travel. For more info on astral travel and the energy body read something by Robert Bruce on his NEW energy system. I'm reading it at the moment and its great!
Another meditation (not so active) which has helped me to improve my control of the energy flows in my body, is one by Phillip Permutt in his 'Little Sleep Album' (available from StormJewel's Gifts). Its a 10 minute relaxation (there are six different ones on the cd) in which you move your centre of attention around your body. With practice you will start to feel a tingling sensation and this lets you know that you are stimulating the energy body. This technique is also used in mindfulness.
There are many ways to meditate actively, these are just some. Ultimately if you do things mindfully, almost anything can become a meditation, from brushing your teeth to knitting!

Tarot, Oracle and Angel Cards
My favourite is the tarot, I love the fact that each card has been carefully crafted to reflect archetypal images that are found in human consciousness. Each card has so many levels of meaning that allows the full spectrum of human feelings, actions and emotions to be represented. Oracle and angel cards don't have this heritage, and so quality can vary depending on the author, however there are some really beautiful decks, and particularly if you have an affinity with they are wonderful. Oracle and Angel cards often excel at providing a one card reading (like the Jessica Galbreth Oracle, which you can use to guide you through your day, or make you consider new things for that day.
There's loads of info on the net on how to do a good reading, and most decks come with a book with all the meanings and some examples of spreads. If you are looking for another book to help you I recommend Step-by-Step Tarot Reading by Terry Donaldson (available at StormJewel's Gifts). all in all:Tarot, oracle and angel cards are great for the psychic beginner, and for those that love stories. Learning all the meanings of the cards can take quite a while, but a few good books should mean that you can get stuck in doing accurate psychic readings straight away!

A simple Psychic Prediction Exercise
Easy way to start learning to predict the future
Another great exercise with a friend is to practice thinking about something and really concentrating and trying to beam an image of it into their head, and see if they can guess it. Swap over and try it the other way round (you guess what your friend is thinking.
These may not work straight away, but with practice, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
Pendulums and Dowsing
Not Just For Finding Lost Things!
The Pendulum is really easy to get started with, although does take practice to get accurate. I've recently started learning it myself and I highly recommend the Pendulum Box by Sig Loren, as it comes with a pendulum, various boards which can be used to divine the future, analyse people or get advice, and a really cool little book which is very easy and enjoyable to read, and filled with exercises from the start, which keep you interested, but also goes into some details about how the pendulum might work (no knows for sure but there are theories!)
All in all: Pendulums are quick to get started with, although like anything take a little while to hone your skills, and are an extremely versatile method of divination, great for those that like hands-on stuff.

Crystal Balls and other Scrying
Can you see the future?
Eventually you will quickly be able to conjure up images into your head. Some people don't remember what they say when in psychic trance and so recording your voice can be very useful. Scrying doesn't have to be done with a crystal ball, some people like to use scrying mirrors or bowls which are usually black or dark in colour.
All in all: great for those with a visual nature, takes Lots of practice, but if you are determined is a very rewarding method of divination.
Ouija Boards and Magic Message Boards
These boards work by two to four people holding a type of token called a planchette together, and then the spirits (hopefully not your mischievous friend!) guide you to the letters or symbols and spell out the answer to your questions. Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to like when am I going to die, whether you get a true or fake answer it will freak you out! Also make sure that you can really trust those that you do it with. The ouija board or magick message board can be very interesting but if you're new to divination you should think about trying one of the other methods first.
All in all: Not for everyone and must be taken seriously but can be a powerful tool for answering questions
Unlock your subconsious and psychic messages
The great thing about automatic writing is anyone can do it, and you can have a try right now! The most important thing is to not try and control what you write or draw, give up all mental control! (I know you are probably bored of reading about meditation by now but a quick meditation before hand will do wonders! optional tho! :o)
You will most likely see things that represent hidden thoughts and feelings within yourself. You can also use this technique whilst thinking about others, or a particular situation that needs clarification, and reveal insights about them you didn't know you knew! However to become really skilled at Automatic Writing and Drawing, especially if you want to try and channel messages from spirits, a kit by an expert is recommended, as you can really develop this skill with some help. Creating a Psychic Sanctuary
or a Sacred Space
Psychic intuition and precognition can occur at any time in any place, but to maximise your chances of psychic predictions, why not create a Psychic Sanctuary? (similar to a sacred space).
A Psychic sanctuary is somewhere you can keep all your psychic tools and psychic journal, and also a place where you can feel happy, relaxed and ready to use your abilities. As kids we create dens and play areas for that feeling of safety, fun and being removed from the outside world. As adults we can still do this with a bit of imagination.
You may wish to have a psychic sanctuary in some beautiful place outdoors. If it were in a wooded glade, you might pick a tree you feel drawn to, decorate it with ribbons and offerings, perhaps bring some tea lights with you (but do bring holders as you don't want to start a fire!) and maybe even leave some crystals or some kind of offering by the tree.
It's great to have a sanctuary in doors as well, for rainy weather and for some place you can keep your psychic tools. If you can't devote a whole room to it, just one corner is fine.
Firstly, it's a good idea to purify the area from any negative energies that might prevent you from fully accessing your powers. I highly recommend using acacia gum (arabic gum) for this as it not only purifies but also aids in evoking psychic visions and prophetic dreams. You would need a resin burner for this, and also some charcoal discs, all these things can be found in my shop.
You may prefer to use smudging sticks, sage is a particularly cleansing and purifying stick to choose for this and smells gorgeous! You would need some kind of feather and a holder (traditionally an abalone shell) both of which you can get from my shop.

- Opalite helps to improve psychic abilities and spiritual communication particularly through it's ability to remove energy blockages and to help you deal with hidden feelings and problems.
Creating a Psychic Sanctuary space is very rewarding, and provides a great place to go when you want to meditate and/or work on your psychic ability. Whilst precognition, clairvoyance and other psychic powers can happen at any time, having a relaxed and specially created space can really help to encourage these things!
