A Guide to Giving Up Smoking
If you want to know how to quit smoking then you've come to the right place.
I was in exactly the same position as you and I have been smoke-free for over five years now. Almost all of my friends and acquaintances have also quit smoking now too.

Allen Carr was an ex-smoker who developed a new way of approaching quitting smoking.
His approach uses mental framing techniques to place the smoker in a position where they realise that they are depriving themselves of all the benefits that non-smokers already experience.It's a simple, yet effective psychology and can only really be appreciated by reading one of his books or attending one of his clinics. The video below offer a good introduction to the method.
I quit successfully for six months after reading one of his books, but started again after smoking only one cigarette. Once you have quit there has to be no going back.

These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled "We Love Cigarettes". The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty damn good, it convinced me (a 5 year smoker) to quit cold turkey. It has been a couple months now and I'm still going strong. Update: It has been over one year since my last cigarette and I have never been tempted to look back. I really hope this simple advice has helped someone else.

The main points to remember when you go through this difficult patch are:
* Be Mentally Prepared - know that you will have cravings and be ready to tackle them
* Resist temptation - one cigarette will lead you back to square one
* Treat Yourself - do not feel guilty!
* Stay at home -if that's what it takes
* Avoid situations that you associate with smoking - I avoided bars and parties for 2 months until I was clear
It takes about three months until the cravings slow down. In this time you will possibly gain weight, feel irritable and have minor headaches. Your friends may also criticise you for being boring. Ignore them. You need to put this time into perspective. Here are some of the benefits that you will gain:
* 3 days - your body will start to clear out bad chemicals such as carbon monoxide & nicotine
* 1 month - you will notice that circulation improves
