Your Role On The Important Day

It may just be another day in your life, but the the bride and groom of the wedding you're at, it's the most important day ever. If you're giving a toast at a wedding, it can be one of the most difficult things you have to do, but it will be one of the most important things you will ever do for the newly weds. It is important that your toast is well thought out and planned in advance and that it has meaning and sincerity.

What NOT To Do When Giving A Wedding Toast

There are few things that you should definitely avoid doing when giving a wedding toast. Most importantly, make sure the toast is, appropriately, about the bride and groom. Avoid talking about yourself or trying to make the toast about yourself. This is not about you, it's about them. A funny anecdote is always a great addition to a toast, but be careful because this often leads to toasting yourself rather than the bride and groom.

Do not ignore one of the newly weds! More than likely, you knew the bride or groom first and know them better than their partner. If you are the best man or the maid of honor, it's ok to talk specifically about one or the other, but in general, it's best to always talk about both the bride and the groom. Try to talk about stories that they are both involved in, such as how they met, how you met them, or a vacation you all took together.

One last note about funny stories and jokes...keep them G rated! I'm sure there are some hilarious drunken nights you have shared with the bride and groom, but keep in mind that the families of the bride and groom will be present. You should never say anything that will embarrass the bride or the groom.
