But boy, picnics can be tough when it comes to keeping our commitment to an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. Would you agree?
Single-use plastic containers, throwaway dishes, plastic knives and forks, and the ubiquitous beverage bottles and plastic bags.
How to stop contributing to the mess and enjoy an eco-friendly picnic? It's easier than you might think!
On this page, you will find nine earth-friendly ways to assure your picnic is as green as it is fun. Each tip comes with a short selection of the most eco-friendly picnic products I can find. I've also included a list of pantry staples for spontaneous picnics, along with a couple of easy recipes--everything you need to drop everything and go.
Ready? Let's green our picnics!
Eight picnic essentials, plus one alternative
What you need to drop everything and go
Every good picnic kit must have these eight basic items. Later on, I'll share some of my favorite not so essential, but oh so nice to have items, some of which feel like essentials in my kit.Oh, and for those times you just can't carry the stuff back home, Number 9 is a bonus and takes you to the best, most eco-friendly disposables.
Use the links to jump directly to the sections on this page describing the greenest, no-buy solutions, as well as my top picks for eco-friendly manufactured goods available today in each category.

Eight essentials for your grab-and-go picnic kit and one alternative
- Compact, sturdy basket or tote - Must be easy to carry when loaded
- Picnic blanket - Must be lightweight, washable and comfortable when the grass is damp
- Tablecloth and napkins - Reusable, easy on the planet, easy to carry
- Tableware--Plates, cups, utensils - Again, reusable and lightweight are the watchwords
- Small cutting board and knife - Essential, especially if you tend toward spontaneous outings
- Corkscrew - Love wine with your brie? Gotta have a good, portable corkscrew.
- Cleanup supplies - Ditch the wipes and paper towels!
- Trash bag - The good news: You may not need it!
- If you just have to have disposable picnic ware - Make it recycled, recyclable or better still, compostable
1. Compact, versatile basket or tote
Must be easy to carry when loaded
An ordinary daytime backpack is a pretty good substitute for a sturdier picnic basket. We have a large canvas one from LL Bean that has a couple of bottle sleeves, lots of pockets for a bottle of wine, a cork-screw and knife, and all the other goodies. If you don't already own an adequate carryall bag, consider the handsome and functional options coming up next.

Your greener picnic basket may be an easy-to-carry tote
Five eco-friendly picnic totes
Just because the manufacturer claims their product is "eco-friendly," "green," and fairly traded, it's not necessarily so. Sometimes you have to read between the lines.
I trust the folks most who tell me what their products are made of, where they're made, and whose products are certified Fair Trade. That's a tall bill.
Not all of these products meet my full criteria. I've researched them the best I can, and I'll continue to seek more information, as well as hunt for more products that meet my core values.
If you want to be sure it's green AND fairly traded
- Snack-wrapper picnic tote
- A greener tote from Ten Thousand Villages. If you want to be sure it's green and likely fairly traded, try this tote made from snack wrappers by workers in Bangladesh. It's pretty bare bones, but the cool thing is that it is made with snack wrappers that would otherwise pollute the land and waters and just possibly end up in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (or one of the other ocean gyres filling with plastic).
2. Picnic blanket
Must be lightweight, washable and comfortable when the grass is damp
Greenest solution: Keep a couple of old worn comforters, quilts or blankets just for picnics. They're thin enough after years of laundering to roll easily. Wrap a bungee cord or belt around to keep the roll neat and tight, and you have a ready handle.Image: Kenn W. Kiser/aka click

Alternative: For years, I tucked a couple of flannel baby blankets and the long-outgrown crib quilt into the picnic kit. Perfect, as long as the grass or beach was dry.
Pendleton wool throws are the best
Easy to carry and store, warm, damp resistant
There is nothing more versatile. You'll find tons of uses for yours. Keep the wee ones warm in the stands while they're watching their older sister or brother play soccer on a chilly day. Throw it over the cooler for extra insulation on a super hot day when shade is scarce. Lay it on a gravel shoulder to comfort the tots while you change a tire--it's thick enough that the gravel doesn't poke through like it does synthetic fleece. Toss it under sleeping bags for an extra layer of warmth and protection from the damp. It's tough, durable and will last decades without fading or losing its brilliant colors.
I've included a selection of colorful weaves below. My favorite, and the one I had for thirty years, is the Old Hickory Buffalo throw. Even the grayest day is cheery under this pattern.
3. Tablecloth and napkins
Reusable, easy on the planet, easy to carry
Greenest solution: Slightly stained or mended table linens that are no longer suitable for everyday use make excellent picnic cloths. If you're handy, clever appliques or embroidery can spruce them up and make them fun again.Next best: Purchase a yard or so of inexpensive oil cloth from your local fabric shop and keep it with your kit. Oil cloth comes in a wide selection of colorful, contemporary and old-fashioned patterns, is durable and easy to clean. Just wipe with a damp cloth, let dry before folding or rolling away, to prevent mildew, and it will last for decades.
I had one in my camping gear for 28 years. When I gave away my camp equipment, that tablecloth looked almost as new as the day we bought it, and it had served us through numerous thunderstorms, tinder-dry, high-wind desert storms and just about everything between, in nine states.

They clog our storm drains, hang from trees and power lines, and otherwise spoil our parks, streets, riverbanks and oceans.
Worst of all, they go where everything on land must go eventually, into our oceans, where they strangle wildlife.
4. Tableware, including plates, cups, utensils
Again, reusable and lightweight are the watchwords
Now, there are lots of other options, including stainless steel and bamboo reusables. Below are my favorite stainless and bamboo options.
Later on this page, I'll show you some of the more eco-friendly compostable/disposable options for those times you just can't bear to pack stinky, dirty dishes back home.
This cute gecko set is perfect for the kids on your picnic
And can serve adults in a pinch
Untangled Living Anyware Collection Children's Stainless Steel Dish Set, 5 Pieces, Gecko
Amazon Price: $39.99 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
This food-grade stainless steel set is lightweight enough to carry, and you don't have to worry about BPA, pthalates or other leachates in your children's food. Plus, they're a dream to rinse off under a nearby pump or fountain, long as you're careful not to leave a mess for the folks to come after, of course. Unlike plastic, stainless steel does not grab and hold sticky, oily residues. When they're clean, they're clean.
Every kit needs a few multi-use plates and bowls
No worries about leachates when you use stainless steel
Tableware choices abound
Bamboo, stainless, hemp--good for us, good for the planet
5. Small cutting board and knife
Essential, especially if you tend toward spontaneous outings
If you have to buy, though, the all-in-one kit below is as eco-friendly as I can find, and will stand in good stead outing after outing.
Easy, all-in-one board, knife and serving set
If you tend toward cheese and baguettes
Picnic Time Asiago Folding Cheese Serving Set
Amazon Price: $35.95 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
With the knife, slicer, fork and wedge, you have everything you need except the wine, bread, fruit and cheese for your impromptu picnic. Grab your blanket, stop at the deli, and you're set.
6. Corkscrew
Love wine with your brie? Gotta have one.
And if you want the best
La Vigne French Corkscrew, Cabernet Sauvignon Handle
La Vigne French Corkscrew, Cabernet Sauvignon Handle
Amazon Price: (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Even though the case is stamped with the vine name, this little charmer will lift any cork, whatever the grape inside.
7. Cleanup supplies
Ditch the wipes and paper towels!
LunchBot rounds hold everything
without spilling
LunchBots Rounds Stainless Steel Leak-Proof Food Container Set, 8-Ounce and 16-Ounce
Amazon Price: (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Perfect in lunches for kids and grownups as well as in the picnic ready-kit, these compact little rounds hold more than you'd think, and have the smooth, small footprint you need when you're toting.
8. Trash bag
You may not need it!
Truth is, though, when you carry reusable containers, dishes and utensils, you just don't have that much trash to clear. A small brown lunch bag may be all you need, if that.
Tuck your delectables into eco-friendly containers
Reusable sandwich bags, pouches and lightweight stainless bots
9. If you just have to have disposable picnic ware
Make it recycled, recyclable or better still, compostable
Picnic food--Greener, healthier, just as quick
And delicious!
Living on the coast as we do here in San Francisco, the weather can change quickly. When the sun is out, we want to pack up and head for the park or the beach on a moment's notice. We keep staples handy that are easy to mix and match in a variety of tasty ways.
Below, I share a list of our favorites, along with my tasty, easy 15 minute potato salad and super quick lemonade.
What you need to keep on hand for those spontaneous picnics
In the pantry and in the fridge
- Boiled eggs
- Mayonnaise for whisking up a quick dressing or spread
- Sour cream and yogurt for sweet or savory dips and dressings
- Stone-ground mustard also good for whisking up a quick dressing or spread, or wonderful by itself on baguette rounds with a bit of salami and cheese
- Baguette or batard from your local bakery--or your own, if you bake
- Hummus for dips and spreads
- Sweet and savory pickle relishes
- A selection of crackers
- Your favorite soft and hard cheeses
- Fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables
- Your favorite grass-fed, pasture-raised, organic deli meats sliced thin
- Organic wine or wine made with organic grapes, red and white - My latest red discovery: Green Bridge Zinfandel, 2009 (Yum!)
Condiments for a fast, grab-and-go picnic
My favorite brand, when I can find it, is Natural Value Organic, because several of their products are available in glass jars. Annie's Organics come in plastic, alas, but I trust the Annie's brand for organic, wholesome goodness and buy it when I can't get Natural Value. Keep these handy, and you'll be ready for any quick picnic. Add your favorite ketchup or barbeque sauce and you're ready for an impromptu cookout.
Skip the deli - Make potato salad in just 15 minutes
Quick, easy and picnic scrumptious
This is my favorite all-purpose picnic container
Because it's lightweight, portable, and safe
A big plus is that LunchBots claims the Chinese workers who manufacture their products are unionized (That's more than we can say for many Americans today!) and enjoy excellent working conditions. I'd like to see some Fair Trade certification around that to be sure, but I'm glad to know the company is aware of the concern.
LunchBots Eco Stainless Steel Food Container, Green
Amazon Price: $14.50 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
This little jewel is the perfect container for my two-serving potato salad in size, shape and well, a kind of rustic elegance, wouldn't you say? It handles well, the lid feels secure enough for a backpack, tote or basket, though I wouldn't expose it to excessive jostling. When I fill it with moist foods such as potato salad, I always pack it flat with the top up. But when I fill it with a sandwich or cut veggies, I can stand it upright in my backpack or lunch bag. Fill it with crunchies for dipping or a tossed salad and pair it with one of the little leak-proof round Bots (I'll show you a couple later) filled with dips, spreads or dressings and you've a very nice set for your work or school lunch.
Easy lemonade
Make it on the fly
- Serves: 4
- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Total Time: Five minutes
Don't have time to chill lemonade? Make it on the fly. You can make it ahead, just before you go out the door, or take the ingredients with you and make it there. It's that easy.
Ingredients
- 1 large or 2 small lemons
- 1 T organic raw sugar or to taste
- 1-2 C ice cubes
Instructions
You will need an insulated, wide-mouth 1 qt (or near) container for this recipe. If you're at home, drop the unpeeled, uncut lemons into a bowl of hot water for a minute or two to release the juices. If it's a hot day and they've been out on the counter, they'll be juicing already. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze out all their juice into a small pitcher or measuring cup. I like pulp in my lemonade, but if you don't, remove the pulp when you remove the seeds.
Pour the juice into a 1-quart container, fill it about half full with cold tap water, add the sugar and stir. Drop in the ice cubes and add water to the fill line, cap securely, and you're done. Easy peasy!
The (almost) quintessential thermos
Easy carry, hot or cold, it's all good in this container
Thermos Nissan 34-Ounce Stainless-Steel Bottle with Folding Handle
Amazon Price: $28.68 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Folks who reviewed this container said to be sure not to fill it above the fill line. If you fill above that line, it may leak. Duh! In addition to its removable strap, this thermos has a wide mouth so you can make my easy, quick lemonade right in the jug, add the ice, seal and go.

- It's Friday evening as I'm reading your lens and tomorrow is suppose to be very nice weather where I am. Reading your lens has really inspired me to do a picnic. One of the items on your list is something I always seem to forget - a cutting board. We have a small one and this time I'll remember. Thanks for the great lens.
