Planting Tomatoes

As hard as it is to discard young healthy plants it is far better to do so if your space is limited. Tomatoes need plenty of space. Give them at least two feet between plants and you will be rewarded with more tomatoes than you will be if you overcrowd them.

A trick many gardeners use to ensure their tomatoes have a good root system is to trim off the bottom few branches and plant them as deeply as possible. Tomato plants will grow new roots from any part of the stem that is underground. If you find that the plants are too long and spindly you can lay them out horizontally with just the top forage out of the ground.

Remember to place your stakes in the ground at the time of transplanting to avoid damaging the roots.

Pruning Tomatoes

Most varieties of large tomatoes are indeterminate, which means you will need to prune them as often as once a week. It's an easy enough task, just pinch off any new shoots that start growing between the stem and the main branches. Don't pinch off the flowers, just the shoots.

Once your plants start bearing fruit remove all but the largest tomato from each cluster to force the plants to spend their energy growing a few large tomatoes rather than a lot of smaller ones.
