How to Grow Leeks

Ranked #18,001 in Home & Garden, #258,350 overall

Leeks are a great vegetable to have on hands especially for soups on those cool autumn nights. Leeks are a cool weather plant that likes direct sunlight. Leeks can be started indoors and then transplanted outdoors usually before the last frost. Many leeks can survive some frost and some varieties can even be over wintered in some areas with lots of mulch. With leeks, you do not eat the green part of the plant. You eat the softer, white end of the vegetable.

Leeks are a part of the onion family, but they are generally milder in taste. Leeks do not keep very long in storage, so many times it is best to keep them into the ground until you are ready to use them. They need to be planted about 6 inches apart, but some guides show that they can be planted closer than that. You need to plant them deep when you transplant them and leave the hole open. Pour water into the hole, letting the water pull the soil down, do not pat it down.

I have just sowed my leeks, I lost them all last year due to the pesky leek moth!

I love leeks! At the end of March I will be planting more, they grow in the cold months and I'm already planning what I cook with them :-)

I have cooked with leeks before because they are so much milder than regular onions. I don't have a garden, but if I did, I would grow some leeks!
