How to Grow Orchids from Cuttings

Have you ever considered growing orchids from cuttings, but didn't know whether it would work? The truth is growing orchids from cuttings is easier than you think! Orchids are one of the easiest plants to grow from cuttings, as long as you know where to cut them. This depends on whether the orchid is terrestrial (grows in the ground), or epiphytic (tree-dwelling).

Epiphytes or Tree-dwelling Orchids

1: Sterilize Your Tools
- Bacteria and chemicals left on pruning shears can be harmful to the plant.
2: Make The Cut
- Epiphytes have aerial roots extending from one or more points on the stem. Make the cut just below these roots.
3: Plant It
- Partially fill a container with orchid bark. Hold the orchid in place, keeping the roots on the bark, while covering the roots with more bark.
4: Water, Wait, & Enjoy
- Epiphytes need lots of water, but be careful not to over-do it. The bark should be moist, but not sopping wet.

Terrestrial or Ground-Dwelling

1: Sterilize Your Tools
- Like epiphytes, terrestrial orchids can also be damaged by bacteria and chemicals left on pruning shears.
2: Make the Cut
- Cut your orchid at the base of the stem. Be sure the cut includes one pseudobulb and some roots.
3: Plant It
- Use a small container with good drainage. Add a small amount of soil-based planting medium to the pot. Hold the roots above the soil and cover them with additional soil. Be careful not to bury the pseudobulb.
4: Water, Wait, & Enjoy
- Add a lot of water and allow the pot to drain. Keep the soil moist, but don't over-do it.
