Quick Guide to Growing Spinach

Tips For Growing Spinach

Growing spinach is fairly easy and can be done no matter what part of the country you live in. Being low to the ground, 10 to 12 inches at maturity, it is a good plant to use at the edges of your home garden. Spinach's dark green, shiny leaves are as attractive as they are nutritious. Being extremely rich in Vitamin A and iron makes it a wonderful addition to some of your favorite meals.

How to Grow Spinach

Spinach is a cool season crop best started in early spring after the danger of a heavy frost is past. If you live in the south, spinach should be planted in the fall for a winter harvest.

A fast-growing crop, spinach likes well drained rich soil and should be planted in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

When growing spinach, plant the spinach seeds directly into your garden, in rows approximately 12 inches apart. Thin the spinach seedlings to one plant every 4 inches.

The spinach plant has shallow roots and needs plenty of water.

Cooking Home Grown Spinach

Cooking Fresh Spinach

Spinach has many uses in the kitchen. It can be used, raw, in salads, or cooked into quiches, omelets, pizzas, pasta dishes or even just served on its own, boiled, steamed or sautéed. Its slightly bitter taste makes it a great companion to many other vegetables whenever you feel like mixing them up a bit. I always incorporate some mushrooms into my sautéed spinach.

I have never grown Spinach, but I do like Spinach leaves sauted or raw in salads. I think it was the Popeye style slimy spinach that put me off as a kid. I might see if I can grown some this summer.
