How To Grow Tomatoes In Pots
Not everyone has the space for a tomato garden. A great alternative is to grow tomatoes in pots, allowing you to put them on the patio, balcony or even grow them indoors.
Selecting The Right Variety For Your Tomato Container Garden
Container tomato gardening starts with selecting a variety of tomato that's suited to growing in pots.
Although you can grow any type of tomato this way, keep in mind that some varieties will require huge pots.
If space is limited it's better to stick with some of the smaller bush type plants like the Patio Tomato which is especially designed for growing in pots, but there are several others such as Roma, Tiny Tim and Cherry Tomatoes that will work just as well.

Pots, Soil and Location
Select a pot that is big enough for your tomato plants to grow. It should be no less than 12 inches wide and need to be at least as deep as it is wide.Other than making sure it has proper drainage holes at the bottom, your only other concern is what you like the looks of.
You could pick something rustic like an old wash tub or maybe a wooden whiskey barrel that's been cut in half.
All plants need good soil to grow, and your tomatoes are no exception.
Any potting soil will work wonderfully and you have the peace of mind in knowing that it has no soil born diseases.
Compare that to the traditional tomato gardener that has to be constantly on the lookout for diseases in the soil and you can see one more advantage to growing tomatoes in pots.
Tomatoes need lots of sunlight so pick a location for them where they aren't spending most of the day in the shade.
An alternative is to move them throughout the day to give them as much light as possible.
After all they are in pots not stuck in the garden.
