How to Hang a Garden Gate

Although a well-made gate will last for years, eventually the ravages of wet rot and rust take their toll. When faced with replacing a gate, it pays to look for an exact replica, as you know it will fit between the posts and you can probably reuse the existing fittings. However, since manufacturers update their catalogues from time to time, trying to track down an identical gate may prove to be a fruitless task.

With luck, you may find a different style of gate that is an exact fit. Or a replacement only slightly wider than the original, so you can skim a little wood off the stiles until it fits well. A narrower gate may be accommodated by screwing a batten to each post, though that probably won't be a very elegant solution. Yet another option is to have a new gate made to measure - but that is likely to be relatively expensive, so you may be better off erecting a new pair of posts for a ready-made gate. You can hang any gate in a day, but allow the complete weekend if you also have to set posts in concrete.

The Gate:

The way a gate is hung on its post will vary, depending on the style of gate and type of fittings you choose to hang it from, hut the principles are generally basically the same. The method described here is for hanging a wooden entrance gate with strap hinges and an automatic latch.
  1. Stand the gate between the posts, and prop it up on a pair of bricks or wooden blocks to hold it the required height off the ground. Tap in pairs of wedges on each side of the gate until it is held securely with sufficient gaps between it and the posts to accommodate the hinges and catch. When fitting strap hinges, the back faces of the gate and the posts should be flush.
  2. Use a spirit level to check that the top rail is horizontal, then hold each hinge in place and mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes and drive in two screws for each flap on both hinges. Before inserting the rest of the screws, check that the gate can swing properly.
  3. Pit the two parts of the catch in a similar way. Check that it operates easily before securing the fitting with all the screws.

Fitting double gates

Double Garden GateWhen hanging a pair of gates between posts, clamp the two latch stiles together, with a suitable spacer sandwiched between them. Wedge the clamped gates between the posts and fit the hinges as described above.
