How to hang your TV on your wall

Ranked #3,685 in Computers & Electronics, #67,254 overall

A short, simply guide to fixing your TV to your wall with a TV wall bracket

Do you have a nice, new shiny TV and you want to attach it to your wall with a TV wall bracket or TV wall mount? While we can't mount your TV on the wall for you, here is a short guide to help you. Not extensive but a general overview of how to hang your TV to the wall.

Can you hang it? Yes you can!

Tilt your TV on the wallMounting your new LCD, LED or plasma TV on your wall is becoming increasingly more popular. But the question is, can you install the bracket yourself? Well, thankfully it's no too difficult as long as you have the tools needed, a spare pair of hands (brackets can be heavy!) and know what kind of wall you have, plasterboard, brick etc. As with everything, if you're not sure then seek professional advise.

Right, all set? Firstly, tools. Here is a small list of suggested tools, accessories you may need.

Electric drill with masonary, wood drill bits. (depends on your wall type)
A dust sheet (not essential but with help keep the floor clean!)
A bubble spirit level. Some TV brackets have a handy built in bubble level.
A cable, pipe finder. Most important because you don't want to drill through your pipes or cables embedded in the wall.
Finally, screwdrivers. Both standard flathead and cross-head (Phillips)

OK, now to get started.

Block and brick walls:

Firstly, decide where on the wall the TV is going to hang and mark it in the center of where you want it. Take your wall plate, place it over your mark and then carefully mark the fixing points through the holes in the bracket plate. Use a bubble level to make sure it's straight. If you're lucky your bracket may have one built in so it's even easier.

Drill the holes, insert fixing plugs and then screw the plate/bracket to the wall using fixings provided with your bracket. Tighten up the screws till it's secure.

Now, fit the arms of the bracket. It may be the right time to attach any cables or power leads at this stage. Another pair of hands could be useful to make things easier.

Nearly there. Next, fix the bracket arm/plate to the back of your TV (usually four holes). Now, ideally with a bit of help, lift the TV and hang or attach to the bracket/plate you fixed to the wall previously. Make sure everything is secure and screwed tight and you're done!

Stud/Plasterboard Walls

The process is very similar to a block or brick wall except that you must ensure you fit the TV wall bracket into at least two wooden upright studs within the partition at each end of your TV moun. Locating the upright studs is easy if you can use an electronic stud-finder. If you don't have one then as a general guide, most UK modern houses which are under 25 years old have studs usually 11 to 13 inches apart and studs approximately 2 to 3 inches in width.

Sit back, relax and as long as everything is fixed corrected, you can enjoy your TV. Remember, this is a short, general guide of how to hang your TV on the wall. TV brackets and TV wall mounts come in various sizes and styles and if you're not sure about anything at all then make sure you seek expert advice. You cant watch your shiny new TV if it's in pieces on the floor!

Mounting your TV over a fireplace

A handy hint

Is it too hot to hang your TV?You may like to hang your TV over the fireplace but be careful, getting this wrong could damage your TV or in the worst cases, cause a nasty fire in your living room!. Here's a small guide to getting it right.

For the best results it's important to do a little research to find out if the wall or chimney breast gets too hot for your TV. If you have an open fire then build up the fire to it's maximum that you believe it will ever be in the future. Let it burn for about an hour and then using a thermometer, take a reading from the outside brick of your fireplace. If the temperature has risen above 90 degrees then it's safe to say that your fireplace gets far too hot for you to mount it over your fire. Another wall is the best option.

If the temperature stays below 90 degrees then it's relatively safe to continue to mount your TV above your fireplace. Remember, this is just a simple test to determine if your TV will be safe above your fireplace. This simple test could save your TV from getting damaged and more importantly, save you from a possible disaster.

Which TV should I buy

A short guide to TV types

LED TVIf you're looking to buy a new TV then there are hundreds of brands available in all sizes all with different specifications. But which TV should you buy? Without going into the ins and outs of how the TVs work or how each model differs from another, our simply guide to the main three types of TV available on the high street today may help you decide which type of TV to get.

There are currently three main types of TV. LCD, LED and Plasma. Firstly, let's look at LCD.

LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
LCD television screens are somewhat brighter than traditional tube or CRT screens and offer a higher picture contrast that has no picture flicker. Typical screen sizes vary from 14" to large screens such as 65".

There is a huge range of LCD TVs available at competitive prices by all brands of manufacturer. Since the introduction of LCD TVs a few years ago, they have dropped remarkably in price and have become the standard of TV most people will have in their home or workplace. Using a CCFL backlight system (fluorescent lamp), this helps present a brighter image. Unfortunately there is a problem with this as only the higher quality screens can allow viewing angles of up to 80 degrees from the screen centre. Alternative screens can have a loss of picture quality when viewed from different angles.

LCD TVs are generally slim and light and with the price drop in recent years, they are popular when it comes to placing your TV on the wall.

LED - Light Emitting Diode
LED televisions are essentially the same as a LCD TV. However the difference is how the screen is lit, by an LED backlight. This enables the TV to have a better contrast ratio, use less power and produce better colours.

Like the LCD TV, LED TVs come in sizes from small to large and prices have decreased over the last year or so. There are two types of backlights of LED TVs, edge-lit and backlit. Edge-lit has lights arranged around the edge of the screen so that the light is spread across from the sides. Backlit has lights positioned in blocks directly behind the screen. Edge-lit are generally thinner and use less power over the backlit type. Even though LED and LCD are essentially the same, LED TVs create better colours and better contrast.

Plasma
Plasma TVs are used for larger TV screen sizes and use phosphors excited by a gas discharge, held between two panels of glass, to display the picture. This allows a fantastic picture across a large area. Plasma TV usually are more expensive because of the larger size of screen but these too are becoming cheaper.

Because of the larger screen size capable with Plasma TVs, general use of these sets is in pubs or public places. However, there is nothing to stop you using them in the home, although sizes are usually 50 inches or more.

Essentially your choice will be determined by two factors, price and room size. Shop around and view the different types on display to get a full picture of what TV is best for you.
