How to improve your business
I went to look for a low cost business that was going under.
Last night I toured my memory for a low cost business that went under; when I say low cost business I mean a business that will sell you sushi for half the price of most sushi restaurants in a 3 mile radius.
If you are over 30 years old you must remember tower the airline that no longer exists that is a great example.
But I was looking for something more local from my experience and then I remembered that I use to work for a club (let's just call it the low cost club) that not only take cheap prices but brought all the other clubs in a 250,000 populated city to fight for their life because prices went so low so fast that business owners were shocked from the move that the low cost club did.
Long story short it did not work well for anyone. The low cost club did not mange to make money because for every 1$ they had expense at a party the only made a 1.25$
It wasn't enough to pay rent and handle the times of the year that nobody wants to go to the club.
After 2 year that low cost club did not work anymore and closed the doors.
The other businesses that ran clubs in the area were not so successful after the low cost club closed. The people of the city still remembered that they got a better price for their night out on the town and felt that all the other clubs were ripping them off. So business owners had no choice and everyone opened a low cost club of their own that made it so since 2005 and until today the unknown city I am talking about has lost 40% of its business related to bars and clubs.
That just shows you that one low cost business can rock the cradle so hard that it can change the way a city decides to spend their money out at night.
But I want to say that clearly a low cost business is a good idea but you must know how low you can go to still make rent and marketing expenses, sell not only at the best price but the right price, and if you catch both you have a great chance of success.
I will post in the future how to open a low cost business the right way, until then put effort in your price and make people pay while your business feels ok.

When you open your website you often put a lot of effort in to it so it can look as perfect as it can, but today search engines find not only sites that are well built but sites that are updated daily and a majority of business owners lose their high page rank in matter of days because there was a lack of investment on building content for the website that updates on a daily or at least weekly basis.
If you are still skeptical about what I am writing look at the best example: my squidoo site has gone 300 spots because I have updated less and less content, my stats on my other sites are so low not only because nobody has anything to look at usually, it is also because they have nothing to look forward the sites are just standing with the same content with the same pages.
When you build a site you must think nonstop how to use your website to improve your business.

How to handle a failing business.
When your cash is low and you still owe suppliers dough what is a business owner do?
There are a couple of simple options that come to my mind from my experience and I want to share with you the main point of them without getting in to any specific details on how to execute them.
The first way to improve your business when in debt is to bring in a partner, why a partner? Because you need to start thinking of day after tomorrow and that day could mean that although you brought in a strategic partner you still lost your business, remember its always better to take some money and put on the side for your personal life than keep re-investing all you have on your own.
The second way is try to change your business concept, if you are selling ice cream in the red square in Moscow on a cold day in December you probably should close up shop and open something with hot food and hot drinks so people will have a reason to leave their house for your shop.
What I mean is if your business is not going well and you will not give up on it just change what you are selling, sometimes changing a sign without changing anything else can do all the difference for saving your business.
If you are still standing and scratching your head look for a case study I gave on this site about my business counseling advice to a certain restaurant in New Jersey.
There is a third resort and that is taking out a loan with a business plan to make things work, this is my favorite option because you grow out of this kind of 'try try again' situation a lot more mature as a business owner.
This all very shallow insight about how to do things I know but making a business come back to life is a art and it takes year of experience of knowing how to fail and succeed to do it right and this experience is not shared fully for reasons that not need explanation.

Improving your employees commitment.
When running a business that has 3 employees or more you need to start making rules and guidelines. But not less important you need to find ways to make your employees better.More important than any improvement is the worker commitment improvement, how do you make a business that makes workers want to work even better than they do?
So how do you improve your own workers? As a business owner who use to have up to 15 employees at once working under my shift I found it necessary to bring to the workers attention the benefits of the job he is doing besides making money.
For example before a PR Event I hosted for a business client I told all my employees the importance of their image in such a event, I told them in a world of opportunities they can transfer from waiter to manager in a heartbeat of someone is overly impressed with their service level and attention to details.
If you think that this is a joke of speech I will give you my own life example. I have worked as a DJ at a club, I always show up early to every gig I come with extra backup equipment and I am very polite and flexible with my clients demands. At the end of the gig the club owner asked me if after the one time show I did as a DJ would I like to work for him as a entertainment manager at his club.
This happened when I was 17 years of age. This only shows you that everything is possible if you work hard.
Make your workers believe that they are doing for themselves not as less as they are doing for you and it might be the only thing you need to improve your work commitment to you and your own business.

From my personal experience with clients at my career as a business consultant I have witnessed that business owners tend to not take all their customer complaints as serious as they should as business men trying to bring in more sales.For example I use to work at a health club that took really low prices for each membership. As a marketing manager I helped out with building a positive thinking process towards all the criticism we got as the gear got old and fragile, until I came in to office the owners use to tell customers "well you get what you pay for" I was naturally against this unfriendly custom.

You have been a business owner for many years now and after seeing everything and experiencing good and bad times your now in front of a new digital era more digital then the one you knew 4-5 years ago.
This digital era has its downsides and one of them is that it brings you to a reality that you must improve your business.
People are talking to you about facebook, twiter, groupon and google+ and you don't know where to even begin your web marketing strategy to attract more customers.
As it is sometimes a good idea to start a facebook page, tweet to your customers and throw to the world coupons that say "50 cents for a beer" you may still find yourself looking in at an empty restaurant or a weak mom and pop shop. You will probably scratch your head wondering why while someone who knows to use the internet for his advantage is cashing in.
It doesn't really matter what kind of business your running you still need to invest more then others do on internet marketing to be ahead of the game.
Occupy wall street today is a great example for how the web can help you grow and expand despite the media attacking your message, in business it's the same you don't need a 100k commercial to get a message out in the world, and today i'll be writing on getting the customers to hear you even if you haven't been around the web for long.
Step Number 1: Build yourself a image
Who do you wanna be? Who do you want to see in your store? What kind of customers do you want to attract. All of these are simple but important questions that you must answer yourself.
For example: I'm a disc jockey, do I want everybody to invite me for any party? Or do I want to attract high income customers with no discounts for anyone or do I want to play bars and night clubs forever.
My answer to myself was I want to attract luxury parties for kids bar mitzvahs and sweat 16 because I know that I understand perfectly these kind of parties and these are the parties I'm known for doing very well so I stick to what I already know that I am good at doing.
A friend of mine on the other side of the coins wants to only play clubs and rave fests he found his niche and he tries to connect with his crowd.
Find your crowd find your customers and you will be on your way, everybody has to aim for the stars but the question is what stars does your business aim for.
Step 2: How to attract more business? Business networking.
After finding who you want as customers find who can help you bring them in.
From the dawn of time businesses have been finding new ways of working together when there was a money profit in store for both sides if they helped each other out.
Now the rules of business networking have changed. Today your have to give something free away to get something for free back (and that free thing is a paying customer). Why free? Because no one wants to pay to get paid when your on a budget.
Example: when working as a marketing manager at a health club I found that 4 out of 5 people came to my gym to look good and be more attractive. Out of does 4 at least 2 said they have been to a cosmetic facility in there life.
Guess what I did? I went to every body hair removal spa in a 10 mile radius and said "whoever gives me the best give away deal for my customers will get the chance to be advertised on websites and the treadmills of my health club. After two weeks one company said it would be glad to give me a free treatment for every new customer that signs at my club and all of my customers were welcome to get a 20% discount at the spa, the best thing is that after a month I got a offer to advertise my health club with a big banner at the spa's website for no charge at all because the spa owner was so pleased that 5 of my customers signed deals with him for hair removal treatments.
At the end of a day my customers got free stuff and told there friends, the spa got new customers and I showed off the health club's logo and special announcements on the spa's websites.
Business networking is not easy but if you can use a business consulting agency to fix you with other customers of their own it's a win win situation for everybody.
Step 3: don't be afraid of business consulting.
While people that don't believe in help are failing some who believe in second opinions are making ends meat. You may not think spending money for advice on your own business by a stranger is a good idea when your short on cash but believe me as a proud owner of a consulting business my customers can speak for me and tell you what wonderful things my company has done with marketing there brand and promoting there affairs and teaching good use of a business budget.
Step 4: start communicating with your customers.
The easy steps are setting up social networks for your business the hard part is setting up websites and pages to lure your customers to your main website or fan page.
One way is using a blog.
Why a blog? Because blogs are great at building a different kind of connection with your customers and if your share ideas and products that people can relate with then your on the right track for making your first mini impact on the web.
For example: I helped out a rental company for sound systems with there search engine optimization for it's website by building a lot of webpages all over the internet (blogs and free websites).
On these web pages I have stuffed lots of information on PA systems and the importance of good sound systems in parties.
And in the end of three months business was booming and calls from new customers came non stop.
So what I advice is if you don't understand how to make a name for yourself on the web let a consulting business do it for you, it's important and efficient for your desire to bring more people to the realization that your business exists.
If you don't make yourself a name on the web even in your own town\city people won't know you are there because web shopping\browsing is the future of window shopping and looking for stuff, time is short people work more hours then ever so they google and bing things they need and if they find you they will drop by your store if they won't find you they will pass your store\cafe on the way to work everyday without noticing your business exists.
And for people to find your small business you must have your name in every corner of the web with a link to your website.
Step 5: go crazy don't be lazy.
Start working like a maniac to stand out, there is probably between 5 and 500 business just like yours in your city and to fight the competition you must go nuts sometimes.
For example, selling a dvd player for 1$ in electronic store on it's grand opening, yes you lose 4$ on each sale but your only sell to the first 5 people who show up in the grand opening, you will still have a mass turnout at your shop that will be in the mind of customers long after they leave your store for the first time.
Never sit on your back and wait for a daily deal to bring in people, go out and shout the word all over, make a sale day a local special day for everybody you can make contact with.
Step 6: try to be a creative business.
Be creative it lures customer to your doorstep, don't think your up to it ? You can always use a consulting business to do this for you.
Step 7: be nice.
Don't ever forget that customers are people! To get them hooked on your business is a lot about your people skills. Even a business with only a e-mail customers service need to know how to be friendly and supportive to it's customers to make then want to come back for more.
The tips I have wrote are far from being all you need to succeed but there a start for anybody who is running out of ideas to improve there business.

On last Saturday I and my girlfriend went to sit in a sushi restaurant called soho in the city of reshon (15 minutes from tel-aviv).
We sat on the bar because there was a lack of free tables and we were handed a ipad instead of a menu, are first imprison was dear god who gives their customers a 499$ menu and for drinks?! Well it seems that this menu stunt has brought more stylish people to sit on the bar to have dinner and not just leave the second they hear that there is no free table for 2/4/8 people.
If you want your waiting/dinning customers to feel special give them a tablet, you won't regret it.
Go on amazon and bring on the style.
UPDATE: After looking the idea over again I just realized that kids in the year 2012 don't like crayons as much as they like gadgets, and a unsettled kid in a fancy restaurant is sometimes a buzz killer for you and your friends or family.
A tablet used in a restaurant can give your accompanying child a good reason to stop crying to go home the minute he sees that there is a angry birds or fruit ninja app on the table and in a big screen (7" or more usually is recommended).
This idea has big upsides and little downsides.
Start using a tablet as a menu today so you can bring in more customers tomorrow.
